Anthony Bourdain had started smoking again, was the first thing I noticed as he sat down with me last February. He was a bit hung over from a recent working trip to south Louisiana for Cajun Mardi Gras; “Harder partying than I’m used to, I gotta say,” he said, laughing.

I knew they would blame this on the Popeye's buffet.
Bastards.
Bastards.

Uhh...why did Bourdain have trepanning tools in his apartment? Didn't seem to go with books and art.

People really like this guy, huh?

Absolutely, people love him. Have you watched any of his shows? If you enjoy food and travel, it’s hard to find a better show.

I love travel and food, but his show was so boring and he came off as very smug.

Tony was great. I love his show and the way he narrates it. Plus, he wore cowboy boots. You should watch the New Mexico episode. He could shoot a gun too, not bad for a city guy from NY.

I enjoy traveling, not watching other people travel. Didn't he do off the wall stuff like drink tribal, fermented spit and shite like that?

You don’t travel like he did. Not even close.

At Sushi Yama for lunch one day, his show was on the tv behind the bar. Everyone sitting in front of the tv watched as he ate the anus of a warthog off the end of a stick.

I've actually done a few Iberostar Grand & Excellence stays that I really enjoyed. I ain't mad.

Never been to one. I'm sure they're nice, tho.
We're on track to pay off $245,000 in Med School debt in under five years, so we only take a +/- $10k Euro trip every other year.
I guess my initial comment was that I don't understand why people are so enamored with TV personalities. There are threads on here pretty frequently. Hell, there's even one on the OT right now. He's gone. Oh well...

Totally bizarre interview. Granted it was a transcript of an entire conversation (Which probably was meant to be developed into a coherent article, but yikes). Halfway through the meandering political diatribe I tried to suss out just exactly what type of political system these folks wanted.
Communism? They hate it.
Conservatism? Death to it.
Liberalism? They must be kicked off the train at the first turn.
Obama? Let everyone down but likes pho.

He comes across as unhappy as hell. He only spends 5 days a month at his NY apartment, but during his precious downtime in NYC he's got 2.5 hrs to spend with a random journalist he doesn't know? It made me sad. I wonder how much his relationship with Argento had an impact on his mental health. Not all people who feel a deep connection are terribly good for each other. The desperate drive to work-work-work isn't such a positive sign.

Not really his shtick, though he did some of that when his show first started. It was really just about eating whatever interesting local cuisine people had. Andrew Zimmern (Bizarre Foods) is the one whose whole show was centered on eating "disgusting" foods from various cultures.
Bourdain's show really reminded me of a good creative non-fiction travel essay. It viewed pretty much like reading really good travel writing, imo.

His locations were well researched and shows were well produced. His shows were more like documentaries and less like food network shows.
