Bourbon for beginners

I'm beginning a bourbon journey mostly for the alleged health effects, esp the improvement of cognitive performance and reduced risk of developing dementia/alzheimers (family history). I've never been much of an alcohol drinker, just never cared for it. I went to a few liquor stores and picked up a variety of small bottles of bourbon. The first bottle I opened was Wild Turkey 101. I let it sit for a couple of weeks before trying. It's strong (to me) but I think I can develop a liking over time. I kinda dig the smokiness.
What bourbon do you baws recommend for a beginner? Better neat/straight or in a cocktail? How should I proceed? Besides the Wild Turkey I bought:
Gentleman Jack
Evan Williams
Makers Mark
Ole Smokey
Screwball Peanut Butter Whiskey
These are airplane size up to 220ml bottles.

As someone who had a parent die from early onset ALZ, plus an aunt and a 1st cousin I'll say you can go frick yourself for this post which contains zero humor.

Congratulations. Getting on a health food regime is a great way to start the new year. You have to start somewhere. Your first health food acquisition might as well be bourbon.

If he’s not trolling, he’s a stupid frick

Moderate alcohol consumption is thought to be associated with a lower risk of dementia; the association of alcohol with cognitive outcomes appears to be J-shaped or U-shaped, with harmful effects of both abstinence and excessive alcohol consumption
The evidence is far from robust, however, as excessive alcohol consumption is not included in current guidelines to prevent or delay dementia onset
Inconsistency in findings stems from the fact that most studies assess alcohol consumption in late life, which may not reflect lifetime consumption, and selection bias is likely to affect these findings as studies used face-to-face assessment of cognitive status
What this study adds
The results show a greater risk of dementia in those who abstain from alcohol or consume >14 units/week, with risk increasing in a linear fashion at higher levels of consumption
BMJ
There are other studies that conclude the same. As a life long abstainer who has a family history of dementia/alzheimers, I'm looking for prevention where I can find it. If a couple of drinks a week can even possibly lower the risk, I'll take it. Troll, idiot, whatever you want to call me I don't care. I guess I can talk to some cashier at the liquor store.

Not terrible choices.
Skrewball is a decent option for after dinner sipping but not really a bourbon.
I’d get some Jim Beam because it’s cheap and not bad for a cheapie. Get the Jim Beam Black to compare.
Woodford is a good one to try because you can order it when you are out. It’s widely available.

Start with the 80 proof Bourbons. Beam, Old Charter, etc

Woodford might be the best introduction to bourbon there is.
And to those throwing diggs at OP you may want to make sure he is actually trolling before acting asinine in this thread. There are studies showing legitimate health benefits with bourbon, so OP sounds as if he could be serious. I didn’t read it as sarcastic, but if it actually is then feel free to flame away at him.

Totally serious. My mom has early dementia, an aunt died of alzheimers. I'm finding myself forgetting more stuff than I feel like I should in early "old age" and if I'm destined to get dementia I want to hold it off as long as I can. I expected the ribbing for claiming health effects but studies show a few drinks a week do/can/might help.

Bulleit. Make you an old fashioned with it

Best advice is to go talk to your doctor. Not an internet Food and Drink Board, or a Liqour store cashier. See below from the Alzheimer’s Society
The link between alcohol and dementia (or lack thereof) in non-drinkers however is not fully understood and individuals who do not currently drink alcohol should not start as a method of protection against the development of dementia.
From the evidence collected to date, it is not possible to determine what effect drinking within the NHS recommended alcohol guidelines has on a person's risk of dementia.

It’s one bourbon I’d rather never drink. But it’s popular, widely available and not super expensive.
And most people like it. I’m an outlier.

But you’ll drink Jim beam?
I don’t get how people drink cheap crap unless they are poor

Can people drink what they like?

Old Charter and Jim Beam.

The others aren't bourbon and the Jack can be debated.
You started with the highest proof, which is fine, but may be too strong for a beginner.
Try the Evan Williams, Jack, and Makers next.
If your favorite was
Wild Turkey 101 - try Russells Reserve 10, Four Roses Single Barrel or small batch, Old Forester
Evan Williams - try Elijah Craig, Buffalo Trace, Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve
Gentleman Jack - I'm not sure. Any of the above. Maybe George Dickel, Chattanooga, or Jack Daniels single barrel.
Makers Mark - try Makers 46, Larceny, Weller
I like it neat, but started with a ice cube. The water will change the taste, but the ice can help until you get used to the proof
If you do a cocktail, do a bourbon forward one, like an old fashioned.
My bourbon journey started with Elijah Craig. Then Old Forester, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, Knob Creek, Makers 46 ....

I don't think there was an attempt at humor. Your reaction is a bit extreme.
