How long before you finish a bottle after opening it? Does it go bad after a certain point or the flavor change significantly?

I find minor changes occur once air is introduced to the bottle, but those changes are positive. It helps bring forth some subtle flavors that were not there at first opening. I've seen videos though where people do experiments to prove this is not true and does not happen, so it could all be psychosomatic.

It never goes bad, but once it hits the halfway point of the bottle the flavor may start to deteriorate over time. I use the argon spray to keep wine fresher longer on my low volume bottles to help preserve their flavor just in case this really does happen.

Who knows what the real truth is. The thoughts on all of this is not proven and have differing opinions.

I’ve got a few bottles that have been open for 4 or 5 years that I only take a pour or 2 a year from. Saw an article the other day that bourbon only lasts 6 months to 2 years after open. So I was wondering what the bourbon drinkers here thoughts were.

I've never managed to have a bottle last 3 months, but my favorite scotch is about 2 years open and still great. If you're that worried about it get one of those suction sealing wine thingies and use it on your bottle if it fits. Or drink faster.

Not really worried about it. I’m no connoisseur, just trying to learn and see what the actual bourbon connoisseurs on here’s opinions were. If the flavor actually changes or breaks down that fast I can definitely drink faster.

Bourbon does not go bad, even 20 years later

It won’t go bad, but some alcohol may evaporate. But really that is just concentrating the flavor of the whiskey.

I have a bottle of Jack Daniel’s I bought at the distillery in 1996. Never been opened. I’ve always wondered if it has gone to shite. It is stored in a box out of direct light in my closet.

I don’t think anything changes if it’s never been opened. Once air is introduced is where things start changing.

Unless you’re drinking it neat, doubt you’d notice any difference

I’ve got a bottle of Japanese bourbon that is 7 years old - prolly have one or two glasses a year from it and it still tastes great.

Light and especially heat will degrade it over time. If you have something really good, store in a dark and relatively cool place. In simpler terms, don't keep it in your garage, and it'll be fine.

Sometimes a day, sometimes a few years.

It’s bad I’m sure. Send it to me and I will dispose of it for you.

The more oxygen/light exposure, the more a whiskey can change. If you’re talking 6 or 12 months, probably no big deal. If you’ve got two pours left from a bottle that’s 10 years old, that can be greatly affected.

Any low quantity old bottles can be helped with this…apologies for the massive pic

Most bottles will have a sweet spot of about 3-4 pours. Where just enough air is in it. The very first pour is usually y the worst pour followed by the last pour. When a bottle, gets down to 1/4 or less I try and finish it within a couple weeks to a month. If i get a bottle I don’t like at first pour or two I will let it sit for a month then go back to it. It a bunch of Voo Doo cause your taste change over just a few weeks sometimes, but bottles do change over time for sure.
