Has anybody tried all three of this food subscription boxes?

I tried BlueApron this week and was disappointed that they can't give you options like low calorie or low carb meals.

Hello Fresh seems to be the most expensive at $70 for 3 meals that feed 2 people.

Home Chef is $59.70 and you can customize it to be low calorie or low carb. But I've never heard of Home Chef.

We did Hello Fresh. It was really good. I enjoyed cooking the dishes, it was stuff we wouldn't have otherwise prepared.

Blue apron and hello fresh

Both are good. Makes cooking easy and fun. Anyone can do it. I only buy the recipes I know my kids and husband will love

A girl I know did HelloFresh for a week -- she said she thought the food was solid, but she was annoyed that a lot of the seasonings didn't come in the box -- i.e., your salt, pepper, etc.. She also said most of the food was under seasoned if you followed the recipe.

She also said that compared to the boxes she used to get from the Hollygrove Market the value wasn't there. This is all secondhand, so take it with a grain of salt (that isn't included in the box )

That happened in my BlueApron box too. Thank goodness I have salt and pepper at my house. It also called for olive oil. Fortunately that's the only oil I use. I was also kinda annoyed that the instructions told me to bring a pot of salted water to a boil. I assume that means fill the pot up with water to the top but how much salt? I'm awful at cooking so I need details like that to be included. Also the instructions said to use a medium skillet. We have like 6 skillets so I don't know which one is the medium. This is why I let my husband cook. Cooking is hard! BUT these boxes do make it easier for me because I loathe the grocery store and I hate having to measure stuff and it arrives measured out for you.

I feel like you're fricking with me

I didn't try it, I was just relaying her comments. In my mind I blew some of it off -- who doesn't have salt and pepper? Ha. But if it's really marketed as being all you need, they should probably toss that stuff in there, right?

Unfortunately for her that doesn't seem to be the case

the thing I don't get about these services is that you can get take out for just about the same price

and from this post, it looks like your house will be safer if you just get take out. You have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, right?

no lie, I have put things on the stove and completely forgotten about them. boiling eggs seems to be a popular thing I forget about.

It is being marketed that way. I guess there is some fine print somewhere that must say use your own salt and pepper and olive oil.

You are unintentionally hilarious. The comment about the skillet just killed me. I applaud your efforts, we all start somewhere!

We do Plated some of the time. They occasionally have Paleo and gluten free choices but most of it is carb heavy.

AND you know what else they did to me I just remembered?? Ok, my first dish required me to "peel and mince ginger". But they don't tell me how! It was not like the pink ginger at the japanese restaurants, it's a hard root looking piece. But I couldn't peel it with my fingers and the skin looked too thick to use the carrot peeler. I had to stop everything and do a youtube search for how to peel and mince ginger!! What they should have instructed me to do was "get a knife and cut the skin off then chop it up as tiny as you can."

Anyways, I decided I'm going to try the HomeChef box next. They give you 11 choices!!

No offense, I'm sure you're trying, but I think cooking is not your thing.

also known as "peel and mince"...

Like another poster said, we all start somewhere. I was an awful cook in college, but nowadays i'm pretty damn good. I have several dishes that my wife or other family members or friends request me to cook.

I think some youtube videos would be helpful.

Start with Food Wishes. He will get you started. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to check out some Good Eats episodes. They have some on Netflix, and others can be found on youtube.

I think there's a mail-a-meal place in BR and maybe other cities that sends you meals that you just heat up. That'll solve that pesky ginger peeling problem.
