I'll be in Birmingham next week. Is there a bbq with a good beer selection that you would recommend?

How about a brewery with good food?

TIA

I've been to Saw's BBQ Southside and the Homewood location and both are legit.

IMO. the best BBQ in Bham is Saw's. My favorite is the one in Avondale, but the Juke Joint in Crestline has the best beer selection and in essence, it's the same bbq. The brewery with the best food is probably Back Forty. They've got solid beer too. Best brewery in bham is Trim Tab but they do not have food. Sometimes they'll have food trucks out there, but they're hit or miss. Also check out Post Office Pies if you like pizza, it's right next to Avondale Brewery.

BBQ
1. Saw's
2. Jim n Nick's
3. Costa's BBQ
4. Archie's in Hoover
5. Martin's/Rodney Scott's/Moe's

Breweries
1. Trim Tab
2. Good People
3. Back Forty
4. Avondale
5. Ghost Train

Pizza
1. Post Office Pies
2. Slice
3. Bettola (on the nicer side)
4. Vecchia
5. Trattoria Centrale

Saw's is legit.

Bob Sykes in Bessemer is old school Birmingham BBQ. You won't be disappointed at all.

Saws is best. Just all around good, classic, “hole in the wall” kind of bbq.

I personally love Martin’s though. Their beans are amazing. The pork sandwich with slaw and their devil’s sauce is the best I’ve ever had.

Martin's is definitely great, I was just throwing out some Birmingham-only locations. I know Jim N Nicks has gone a little corporate, but they started here in Birmingham.

Archie’s and Bob Sykes are my go-to’s depending on where my workday takes me.

My opinion - Jim N Nicks is too high in your ranking. I’ve been disappointed the several times that Ive been there so I’ve stopped going. Other options are way better.

Rodney Scott’s and Martins are both good. Moe’s is just ok.

Back forty has best burger I've ever had

Saw's is incredible as mentioned. Parking is way easier at Juke Joint vs Soul Kitchen

You're not wrong on this, it's probably more nostalgia for me, used to go a lot growing up. After Nick sold off it's gone downhill.

Thank you all for the info. Looks like Saw's it is for BBQ. May check out a couple of the breweries.

If you go to Saw's do a little research before you go to one. Each kind of has it's own twist. Soul Kitchen (Avondale) is more soul food with BBQ. BBQ (Homewood) is more traditional BBQ. Juke Joint (Crestline) has their own menu with specific stuff (boudin, catfish, fried oysters, shrimp & grits). All are excellent. I prefer Soul Kitchen but it's also closest to my house.

Also if you're looking for straight BBQ, Rodney Scott's is a great choice. Just be aware though that it's Carolina BBQ and their sauce is basically straight apple cider vinegar.

I'll be staying in Five Points so most likely will go to the Southside location.

I like Miss Myra's in Cahaba Heights. Basic hole in the wall joint. Not much of a dining experience but good BBQ in my opinion.

Solid, and doesn't get the love it deserves. Hell, I forget its there half the time.

Agreed. If you get out to Bessemer, I do recommend Bob Sykes (and Maxine too).

Old school:

Archie's on 31 in Hoover.
Golden Rule in Irondale.
Carlile's downtown.
Bob Sikes in Bessemer.

These are the iconic bbq places that have been here for a long, long time.

New school:

Saw's in Avondale or Crestwood.
Martin's in Cahaba Heights.
Rodney Scott's in Avondale.

Local chains:

Full Moon
Jim n Nick's

If it was me, I'd hit an old school place then one of the new school ones. The atmospheres will be different for sure, but the bbq will be good. Maybe Ms Myra's for lunch, then Saw's for dinner/beers.

Full Moon not Blue Moon. Shows how often I et there. I do like it every now and then, but I live close to Ms Myra's and Martin's. Makes it hard to go anywhere else.

It's a shame Johnny Ray's is pretty much done. It was the shite back in the day. Also forgot to mention Full Moon, another local place, but I'm not a huge fan.

We haven’t been to talladega in awhile but used to enjoy Full moon and golden rule. It was good but probably more of a nostalgia thing.

I’m not a big fan of full moon but I’ve only been the 280 location.

My favorite is saws by a long shot. Haven’t checked out any of the old school places yet but they are on my list
