I was at the Home Depot by Blue Bayou the other day and they had a decent knock-off for $600. (comparable to the Large BGE)

Lift the lids of both. You will feel the weight difference right away. I'm sure you could get by with a knockoff, but it would use more fuel and not run as efficiently.

I wouldnt call some knock offs.. Some are just as good or better. Some are complete crap.

Grill Dome, Primo, Komodo Kamado, Kamado Joe are on the same level or better

Bayou Classic,Saffire, vision would be a step down in quality. Anything made in China Buyer beware.

I have a large green egg and use it at least once a week. If I were to buy another I would look at the Primo which is nice and is an oval making it a bit larger. I believe you can get several that are comparable.

Cook on...

So fill me in... If I had a large green egg and wanted to maintain 225 degrees for say 10-12 hours, what would that entail charcoal wise? How many lumps? Would I have to add more along the way? These things are fascinating, but I haven't had experience with them.

I have a med and a small the large is just to big for me.
I can get 12 hrs w/ 3-4 lbs. charcoal @ 225 deg.
in the med.
I use the small for salmon smoked w/Alder wood.

Same here, and I have a large.

I actually used alot more charcoal in my Weber for the same time/temp.

Also depends how good your lump is. Bigger pieces will last a lot longer than small pieces at the same weight.

WOW. That's impressive. Would be real cool to cook a brisket or pork shoulder without having to screw with coals all day. I know what's going on my Christmas list.

I've had my large BGE at 225 for 20 hours before pulling off a brisket. Used 5 pounds of lump. Probably could have gone another 3-4 hours.

I'm really leaning towards the Primo because of the oval design. I just cant decide if i want the junior or the XL....

We made a bulk buy of Primos in the fall and got them at a good deal. I am still trying it out but been very happy with the results. A friend of mine has both the Primo and the Egg and says they cook very similar, but likes the design of the primo for additional cooking area...

Nice. I really, really want a Primo XL. Got a lot of other things I need to care of before then, unfortunately.

Yeh, thats what i like about it. Plus its made in the USA with a 25yr warranty...... but i'm really torn with this size thing, $700 or the junior and $1000 for the XL. Almost double the cooking size for only $300 more.... guess i should just make the jump to the bigger size
