I’ve been able to grow a fair bit of okra in my garden and am just wondering the boards opinion of the best way to cook it.

Also, is there a way to store whole
Okra other than pickling? My plant produces 3-4 pods every 2 weeks and I’d like to store it until I have enough to really make a dish.

Fried okra is an easy option. Other than that I like it stewed with tomatoes. There are several variations of the dish that can include shrimp, bacon, smoked sausage etc. Okra is great roasted, grilled or air fried. Or put in a pot of peas. Or put in gumbo if that's your thing.

For storing, okra freezes great.

Fried, pickled, or trash imo

ETA: I will also accept roasted/grilled, none of that “cooked down” bs

Mosquito Supperclub cookbook has a recipe for stwed okra and you can freeze portions to throw in gumbo at a later time. I like okra in my gumbo so it's a win for me.

Large pan
Sliced fresh, non frozen okra
Pan surface covered in oil but not starting to climb the sides and on medium heat

Add the okra in a single layer or very close to it. Throw in a diced onion.Let it sit on medium or medium low and cook a while. Flip a few pieces with a fork if need be to see if it's browning. Once browned, use a spatula to try to flip sections so that the other side of the sliced okra is now cooking. Keep it going. It will start to shrink but eventually softens. You get crispy sweet roasted okra with no fuss really. Just patience. It's delicious.

Or leave whole, rub with olive oil, salt, pepper and throw on a grill and watch it. Just roll them around until all sides get roasted. Works in the oven too.

Grilled okra is great. Lightly coat with EVOO and dust with salt and pepper. Grill raised direct at like 375-425 until it softens and crisps a bit.

I also really enjoy it cut and cooked down with buttered corn.

Slice 1/2” thick then dip in bacon ranch dressing then roll in chicken fry. Drop into 375 degree oil until golden brown. Remove from oil and enjoy.

I prefer sauteed okra over fried. You taste the okra instead of batter.

The way both my grandmothers did it. Young pods(the length of the little finger is best), hot cast iron skillet with a little oil (bacon fat), brown okra on all sides, add water to less than half the height of the okra. Cover and cook until tender. Remove lid and cook water out. Brown second time, quickly. S&p. Serve. My kids fight over this!

Any combo of salt, garlic powder, garlic pepper, lemon pepper works well.

You can air fry/roast the same way.

I cooked some this week that was awesome. Coated in a little olive oil, salt, pepper. Cooked on a hot skillet until it started to crisp up. It was awesome.

But I love okra. Fried okra is hard to beat.
