Does Kanno usually have quality Uni and Mirugai?

They consistently have uni. I haven't had it there in a very long time, but I think I remember them saying it was Japanese or from Santa Barba and not the east coast trash most places here serve. I find sushi joints in new orleans don't have the demand to keep fresh, good uni so I don't order it too often. Mirugai is good. They have good snapper (legit tai, not the farm raised tilapia), sockeye salmon and toro. They have good swordfish sushi as well which you don't see everywhere.

ETA - shite now I am craving sushi. May go tonight and order some uni to see how it is.

Kanno is definitely the best.

It's so sad that a major city so close to such wonderful seafood has such poor choices for sushi

He closes the restaurant once a year for several weeks and heads back to Japan to visit family.

We usually go to Mikimoto, it's always good ...but I already have my favorites so maybe that's why. It's in the ghetto, but do enough business to always keep the product fresh.

Daiwa on the wank is good, but it's on the wank.

They're the same as far as quality to me. I just like Asuka's special type rolls (huge variety) and their pesce hamachi and maguro dshes

I thought the rolls were ok but the price was high and the music was way too damn loud to hold any kind of conversation. I realize it's kind of the point, maybe I'm getting old.

Shogun on Vets in Metry, now probably one of the only Japanese restaurants acutually owned/operated by Japanese.

This is the correct answer at Kanno. I've never ordered from the menu, just tell the chef what you like or ask him for recommendations and then enjoy. He has yet to disappoint on our visits.
