The red label Barq's bottled root beer was made only in New Orleans. They still used the original recipe even after Coca Cola bought the company out. A red label Barq's and some Pastime pizza was a tradition before LSU basketball games when I was young.

Oddly enough (rb), I started this thread a couple weeks ago Virgil's Root Beer. Still going with that.
I'll look up your thread. Like I said, I simply chalk it up to the fact that I don't drink many soft drinks. I enjoy a root beer or cream soda from time to time.
I don't always drink soft drinks, but when I do, it will be Virgil's... From now on

I'll always be partial to Barqs since it was invented in New Orleans (the french quarter).
Abita's is also very good.

I'm sorry, man. I am a food snob. But believe me, I'm suggesting this for your own interest. Try a Virgil's Root Beer and if you don't like it more than Barq's, I'll take everything back.
I have tried every microbrew available in Baton Rouge and Barq's is still the best in my opinion by a wide margin.
The only root beer that ever came close I found on a mountain top in Oregon. At a lodge on Mt Hood, there was a sacred root beer that was even better than Barq's (not a lot better, but certainly better), but I don't know the brand. It was probably Mt Hood Brewery's root beer.

New Frostop in Covington is awful. Even with their "smaller" mug on the roof. I doubt it will stay open a year. And you are right... Root beer was nasty too. Burgers & fries not same either. Chimes is right around the corner and Popeye's next door- no way Frostop will make it HERE!

Check out Virgil's Cream Soda, too. You won't regret it.

Virgil's Orange Cream soda is awesome too...

I'm partial to Deschutes. By far, the best root beers I have had have been brewed in microbreweries, and not bottled stuff. Hops Urban Brewery was very good, as well.

When i was a kid the bar my dad used to go to had birch beer and that shite was so good. No idea who made it though.

Birch Root Beer was from Royal Castle chain. Little burgers with onions (called 'sliders' today). Biggest thrill at Royal Castle was when Richard Nixon was inaugurated as president, burgers cost a nickel a piece on that day --- 20 burgers for $1......

Similar topic a couple of weeks ago. One of my favorites is Thomas Kemper but as far as brands available at Albertsons, etc. in BR, I usually pick up Sioux City Sarsaparilla. If you are a real fan of root beer, check out the Root Beer Store near Seattle or order online
