Best plain king cake in your opinion

I vote Rouses. We picked up a cinnamon king cake (in addition to a strawberry cream cheese) because of someone who is lactose intolerant. It was legit possibly the best plain king cake i have ever had. I don't really care for their fillings though, which is unfortunate because the cake and icing is so good.

Best of the store brands maybe. I prefer McKenzie's for that style.
ETA: I'm not saying Rouse's king cakes are bad though.

That's probably the best in BR. Down here, any of the Randazzo's ones will do.

Calandro's is twice the price of a Rouses king cake. FYI.

I used to get the plain at Calandro's. I get the cream cheese with pecan and coconut topping if I've been excercising.

I've bought (2) plain cinnamon from Alexander's and neither of them lasted 2 days.
Heavenly Donuts has good ones too

Rouses rolls out cinnamon rolls then frosts them. It's passable but the from scratch ones are better

The past two years I have been getting most king cakes from Ralph's Market at Pelican Point shopping center in Gonzales. It has always been fantastic whether I buy plain or filled king cakes.

If true, then Rouses' just got a new customers. Admittedly, I don't buy a ton of king cakes, but Calandro's charges $15.00 per. It seemed high to me, but maybe that's the going rate

$12.99 for the "small" at Calandro's.
$5.99 for the "small" at Rouses.
I'm a huge fan of the Calandro's king cake but it's not that much better.

Zulu King cake from Ambrosia
Any King cake from Doughlicious Donuts in Hammond, they deep fry the king cake with the filling and then top with icing. It's a giant donut with king cake filling
