The local and some national chain places down here have pretty damn good meat selections. It is tough for a butcher shop of any kind to make it work Edit. Sorry if I misunderstood, but yes several local grocery stores have pretty good meat dept
Then why would someone go to Whole Foods or Costco when local businesses will cut you what you want?
Not starting a NOLA/BR fight here, but being the grandson of a man that raised his own cattle & took pride in cutting his own prime beef - I cant imagine the New Orleans crowd of "anti chain/anti corporate food groups" would not support/have local businesses
Thats a little hypocritical when it comes to the restaurant arguement... and I do believe thats apples to apples.
Just curious when these threads appear "where to buy beef in NOLA" repeatedly is dominated by Whole Foods and Costco.
Jus wonderin

Langenstein's gets a bad wrap as being expensive, but it really isn't compared to Whole Foods. WF does have a good butcher department, but I don't spend my money there.

What are the good butcher shops and small grocery stores that cut great steaks around BR?
As noted, Dorignacs, Zuppardos, Leigensteins, Rouses, and even Breauxmart do a good enough job.
Acknowledging that Whole Foods has some nice high end steaks doesn't mean there is not other good stuff.
We have a Chris' Specialty Meat, but I doubt they make it much longer

I try to buy from local grocery as much as possible
Roberts
Lakeview
Dorignacs
Chris's
Also Cleaver & Co. If I want to splurge and don't mind driving further to pick up. Rare Cuts no longer has the Lakeview location.

1. There are only 3 Langenstein's and they are all hard to get to. You have to brave Metairie rd or Uptown traffic to get to them, or go to River Ridge (which has a Breaux Mart and Winn Dixie within 2 miles of it)
2. They have old people hours - they close at like 7 or 8
3. They are expensive. Being local isnt an excuse to charge more imo
4. Their stores are tiny and they have like 3 registers

Cleaver & Co. butcher shop closed
Rare Cuts butcher shop closed
Chris' Specialty Meats cannot be long for this world.
I have tried to support all three, but it's gotta be a tough business to make a buck in.

That's why I mentioned Emmetts knowing the suggestion would get shite on and like clockwork it was.

Langenstein's and its not close. They always have prime and choice strips, filets and ribeyes available. Cheaper than WF and much better than big box value stores. I've been buying steaks from there for as long as I can remember and have never had a complaint.

Seriously though Dorignacs toothless butchers will hook you up with some nic prime strips or ribeyes
Tip that toothless butcher a five spot before you ask him for something. They'll trim it up before they weigh it and if you wink at him he may mis label it.

Why? Seems like they are doing fine whenever I stop in there about once a week.
I had a filet from Roberts last week that was just amazing. It had a special designation that I cannot remember, not Wagu though.
I love to get a whole filet from Restaurant Depot when I have enough people over to grill the whole thing.

Very little profit margin in prime beef and places wont survive w that being their focus.
I am not saying there is a pile in BR, but my grandfather did in north LA for 30 years (unfortunately there are very few now) - but the butchers at Calandro's on Perkins & Alexanders will cut u what u want when u want it... and will order too. I am not sure of who else does, as those guys are crazy accomodating and get about as good as I can get without a supplier contact.
Was just curious. Ima support the little-man/local-man kinda guy. And evidently, unlike some other posters, am willing to pay a little more to do so. To each his own tho - cheers.

Tri-tip from Breaux Mart. Best bang for the buck.
