That's akin to asking for the best wine....it's an agricultural product with many varieties and various flavors. How will you use it? For general purpose cooking,
I use California Olive Ranch brand, grown and pressed in the USA.

^ This. The imported oils may not contain much actual olive oil in their oil. Think "Rip Off".

Is there any place in New Orleans that sells a variety of flavored oils and vinegars. We hit up Bodacious Olive when we get to Pensacola, but it'd be great to have a local place. Vom Fass is closed.

I also use the California Olive Branch brand. I think it's great for the price and widely available. I wouldn't trust Bertolli, Filippo, Pompeian, etc. Lots of pseudo olive oil out there.

It ultimately comes down to taste. The brands above can have a bitter, metallic flavor. Buy a brand you don't mind dipping bread in.

Costco EVOO Organic has been the number one oil in a variety of consumer taste tests for what that is worth. I can tell you from personal experience it is superb and I pair that with Costco Grape Seed Oil when I need a higher smoke point product. Both also do exceptionally well half and half with Costco butter NOT margarine, actual butter. Been a Sams and Trader Joes loyalist for years but this is where I am now FWIW. My clients are always pleased and that is my benchmark.

Hard to find anything good not imported. Best hands down is Villa Capelli, gotta buy it online straight from Italy. It's not cut with any other oils like most everything else you will find. It's expensive because it's legit, but definitely worth it.

A lot of people are commenting on brands, I think you need to decide what variety you like, then find the best producer/marketer. Arbequina is my fave, and there is California production.

Flag from Sicily. This was the brand my mother and grandmother used to use when I was a kid. It is now imported by Impastato's.

I picked up some Castelvetrano saica brand oil with a cannoli king cake and a muffuletta from nor joes. All of it was damn good.

I don't know what the best is. I've used California Olive Ranch, Badia a Coltibuono (expensive but delicious) and Flag, which I've only found at Langenstein's. Domenica uses Flag to make the peppery olive oil.

California Olive Ranch and (Filtered) Frantoia (Sicilian) from Nor Joe's is what I'm using right now. Also bought a high dollar gallon from Nor Joe's once. Can't remember the name. I remember it being OK. While I like the Frantoia the California OR is good too! Have tried Whole Foods 365...it was OK. Have heard lately that it's cut with some kind of oil. Best?? Who knows. I believe personal taste and intended use play a role.
