I'd look at Herbsaint. Great place
Herb is a great option.
Also- I believe Adolfo's new place (& Chef Jared) is opening this week. Can't remember the name. Might be something to consider.

Primitivo is the name. Went to soft opening Saturday. Tripe dish from a Mano back in town. Id give them a few services to get used to fire. Beautiful space

well priced fried seafood
Jack Dempsy's
Deanie's (out of towners love it fwiw)
To wine and Dine on Creole food
Commander's Palace
Muriel's
Cheaper but similar and less dressy
Palace Cafe
Great Cajun food
Couchon
Great flame roasted seafood
Peche
Simple Louisiana Food
Parkway Bakery(another place tourists seem to love being brought to)

so no Commanders, but Herbsaint?
always comes off as kinda stuffy to me. better place to take to impress a date or business clientele. Not a guys night out type place in my eyes.

Before dinner, perhaps hit up Felix's for some raw oysters (not at a table but at the bar). On my first visit to New Orleans I was taken there and found it a gas to stand there slurping them down as fast as my personal oyster shucker opened them.
Drago's may be another place for a quick appetizer before dinner somewhere else.
Actually, nevermind. I just saw that one of your peeps is allergic to shellfish. That would suck. I've had to give up certain things, but shellfish would be very tough. I'm assuming shellfish would include oysters, scallops, clams, shrimp, any sort of crab, lobster, mussels, crawfish...damn.

Never been to Commanders, but I don't find Herbsaint stuffy. More boisterous, loud...with excellent food and service.

I think Cochon is pretty ideal for a group of dudes.
