What is the best mac and cheese you have ever had.
Marcello's in Lafayette is damn good, probably the best I've ever had. Also McAllister's has some very good mac and cheese. I had it today for lunch and it is perfect, but Marcello's is very hard to beat.

Somewhat on topic, I love how only in the American South is Mac & Cheese considered a "vegetable" choice at restaurants.

One of the most distinctive M&C's is the one at Fleming's. It has a slight smoky flavor, very good.

I'm not going to say it's the 'best', a nebulous tag, but it is delicious. I have only dined at the one in Birmingham, but I presume it is universal to the chain.

The one I make, but if we're talking restaurants:

1. J Alexanders
2. Fleming's

Weirdly, I LOVE the mac and cheese from those lunch plates from Wal-mart/Winn-Dixie. So delish.

Ritz Carlton has a good mac and cheese.. with truffle oil.

But martha stewart's mac and cheese 101 recipe beats anything i've had, anywhere.

Beaver's in Houston has a solid mac & cheese, and for $8 for the side dish it better be damn good.

Artisanal in NYC

quote:

Sauce: Deep cheese flavor in a beautifully silky béchamel. Perfect sauce-to-noodle ratio.
Cheese: Mostly gruyere (with a bit of parmesan), and intensely flavorful without getting stringy.
Noodles: Al dente penne pasta doesn't get lost the way elbows sometimes do, and the sauce gathers inside the noodles nicely.
Topping: An exceptional melted-cheese and crumb crust, broiled to crisp perfection—the most flavorful topping we've had.

also had some awesome buffalo mac & cheese from a place on the Lower East Side

The M&C I've had at Beaver's looks very similar but I don't recall which cheeses they used.

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner. The J Alexander's mac and cheese is the best. Fleming's is good also, but when I go I always get the Feming's potatoes.

there's a jalexander's here in nashville which i always put on the same level as chili's and applebees. of course its not very close to my house so i never make the effort to go there.

however it seems people talk about it alot on this board. is it really better than your other generic 'mid tier' restaurant?

i've had ribs there and didn't remember being especially excited about it..and i've never had the mac & cheese there.
