Best foods to eat for lunch for a route driver?

I am a delivery driver and I only deliver to car shops. I don’t have access to microwaves to heat my own food. I always eat at fast food stops and wanted to know what are better options for me to bring to eat and better places to eat at?

I travel for a living. I do not eat fast food. I call in to-go orders from real restaurants, swing by and grab it and eat on the go in the event I don’t have time to stop. If I don’t know the food scene in a particular town, I google local options while driving, pick what looks good and call in the to-go order.

Fast food doesnt have to be bad for you at all. Take McDonalds for example. They have plenty of options that are perfectly fine. Their Southwest Chicken Salad is very good and would fool many people into thinking it was from a respectable restaurant. Calorie wise, fast food doesnt have to be bad at all.
Pretty much every grocery store has plate lunches, sandwiches, wraps, or a salad bar. You can get out of their with plenty of times a very good meal for under $10
Might sound silly but carry a small ice chest with you to work. Get one of those frozen ice packs to put in their to cool it down and you can bring sandwiches/wraps from home or just to have a place to put food in in case youre busy and have to leave in a hurry. Frozen bottles of water work just as well
If youre looking to save money and be healthy somewhat, this isnt always the best option. I would argue that overall, restaurant food is more unhealthy than fast food

Meh.
Salt content is probably about even but restaurants love putting butter and oil all over the place. Even the salads can be pretty bad
This is especially the case in a place like South LA

By better do you mean health wise of just generally better tasting than fast food?
Just better eating I find Whole Foods Bar, find a good Mexican grocery that serves food, Piccadilly, etc...At least it is more options. Salad shops. All cost about the same.

When you eat at a restaurant there’s really no telling how unhealthy the food is. At least at McDonald’s you can see the amount of calories in everything. Their grilled chicken sandwich isn’t bad either.
I agree that bringing a lunch box is the best option for health/convenience/money, as long as you can stomach eating cold food for lunch

If you're a route driver and its hot outside, you'd likely be better off eating a salad or wrap, etc. Something light. As suggested, get an ice chest and bring a salad or wraps for lunch. Some of our drivers tend to graze all day long as opposed to eating a meal. The healthy ones eat F&V and a sammich (at most). They say its a lot better in the hot weather than trying to eat a plate lunch or something heavy. Easier too.
Albertsons, Rouses, etc if you're in SLA for a grab & go. Walmart has some good little salads that will get you thru lunch if you want to stock up on those. Just check the exp. dates as its salad and will spoil quickly.

Fresh fruit is your friend, esp at this time of year. Apples, tangerines, bananas....perfect for on the go, and full of fiber and other good things. Pair a sliced appl with a few tablespoons of peanut butter or almond butter, a handful of roasted nuts, and you’re good to go.
I’m a regular brown bagger, and here are some of my no-effort standards that require minimal cooling and no heating: Hard boiled eggs left in the shell, cucumber and carrot sticks with a cup of hummus, individual cartons of yogurt, cubed sharp cheddar plus quality crackers and a few slices of hard salami, nut butter on sourdough bread w raspberry jam, cold sesame or peanut noodles with shredded chicken, three bean salad...
It’s hard to make good restaurant suggestions without knowing your location. Remember that a grocery store stop can yield better tasting options than a fast food joint in about the same amount of time. And Vietnamese takeout is usually far healthier than your average cheap Chinese takeout lunch special.
ETA: find a park on your route, or at least a shady parking lot. Get out of the vehicle if possible and take a short walk. Or see if a local public library is close by: air conditioned and free, with clean restrooms and free WiFi.

Make a sandwich and bring a lunch box.

Pack a gallon of water banana, handful of almonds, apple and some cheese crackers. You do this during the day for a few weeks along with a hearty dinner you’ll drop lbs very quickly.
Also, look into the 16 hr fast. Pretty much you can eat WHATEVER you want between noon-8pm. During fasting hours 8pm-noon you can only drink water and coffee, if you need to eat something in for breakfast you’re allowed a couple bites of avacado. I did it for 2 weeks before my wedding and lost almost 15lbs while feeling great.

quote:Haha! I don't think it is. When we were married about a year, my husband got a job with a utilities company. Everyday the guys he worked with would put their lunches somewhere under the hood of the truck to warm them up. My husband ate hot chili dogs for lunch everyday. Don't know what the long term effects of heating your food on a truck engine are, but luckily, it was a short term job for him!

I mean, what is your definition of healthy here?
Hate to break it to you but a burger and fries in a restaurant isn't any friendlier on the waistline than fast food. In some cases, it is worse due to per-ounce portion size.
I won't argue against it tasting better, but if we are comparing apples to apples, being local or made from scratch doesn't magically make food healthy.
Now - if you're stopping at local places and getting the grilled chicken and steamed veggies and you're comparing it to a Big Mac meal.. then yeah I guess you're right.

Take along your own at least once a week if not twice - almonds, an apple, peanut butter, banana, plenty of things that can be combined into a nice lunch that don't need to be refirgerated or heated.

You have more options than most being mobile.

I'd say something like wraps or smoothie King type "meals" to keep you going until you could have something fulfilling
