Are certain restaurant locations "cursed"?

I read frequently on the board the assertion that some locations are 'cursed', doomed to failure from the start. Some often mention the Coursey Sherwood area, I call BS. Yes, bad restaurants close, that's not new.
Exhibit 1 Omi
That location had many, many different bad restaurants, now Omi is thriving in this location which is in all reality, is very hard to get to.
Exhibit 2 We don't need it, Exhibit 1 was enough.

Location is a huge factor in restaurants and retail places being successful. Some locations are better than others. Some locations suck and kill off all who venture to thrive there. Your 1 example to the contrary does not change the above facts. Your thread is really stupid.

tha corner spot in oak grove in p'ville. the end spot near winn dixie in p'ville, the location where the industry grill is in p'ville

The reason Omi survives is because it's exceptional. Exceptional restaurants don't require location as much. Most restaurants aren't exceptional, so cursed locations absolutely are a thing.
The place on Sherwood across from the Race Trak. Cursed.

Omi survives because it's the only thing like it in town. Had you put a good Italian restaurant there, it might last six months.

The old Calendar's location (where the shooting took place many years ago) on Perkins near Essen comes to mind. This might be due to the traffic on Perkins and difficulty getting in/out of that place though.
Also, the place on Bennington near The Station seems cursed. It may be that the rent is cheap there, so new restaurants try to start out there and just can't succeed. But wasn't there some sushi place that moved into a spot on Bennington near the Penthouse Club that didn't do well there also?

Do we really know omi is thriving? That parking lot is consistently dead when I drive by.

The restaurant that is on Johnston in Laffy by Corner Bar....even Mellow Mushroom couldn't make it in there. It is Drago's now....we'll see if they survive.

Any non-fast food place on Airline in Metry is subject to low traffic.

The Bulldog, that location went through all sorts of failed ventures before an established name came in and started killing it.
I do think some locations take more to overcome due to low accessibility, bad parking, traffic, etc.

I haven't seen anything worthwhile in there, that Mexican place was hilariously inept, the Middle Eastern was not good and 3 blocks from Albasha, Uncle O's was kind of OK, but the same menu as about 100 restaurants in town. Brewbacker's was there for many years, but the dining area stayed dirty, the staff didn't seem to care, but it usually had a crowd.
Yes, of course some locations are difficult and inaccessible, the old Calendar's on Perkins isn't too bad. Marcella's ( I think that was the name) was the OK, but nothing else there was very good.

Yeah, I do think some locations definitely have things stacked against them where not just anyone can open there.. but an established name and a lot of money going into the place can really turn it into an exception.
Bulldog, like you said. Rum House, even though it wasn’t a failing restaurant building, it entirely changed that little pocket. Superior on Highland.
If that old Calendars was bought by a strong established place, I think it could overcome the failings. It is next door to one of the most consistently packed restaurants in town.. the potential is there. It just has been really meh things over the years that won’t demand a crowd.

I think certain locations, like the old Calanders, just have a certain stigma about the location that everyone just expects them to fail so people don't go.

Without a doubt. The restaurant location in Lafayette in the parking lot of the Grand Theater is one. Not even Mellow Mushroom survived there. Before that it was a Serrano's, which didn't last long either.

I do agree that if you get the right place in, it can change the narrative. A place I used to live by was originally a Fast Track, then a Schlotsky's (sp?) deli, then it was 3-4 other places, then Mama Della's NY Pizza (Restaurant Impossible did an episode on them and they still couldn't last 6 months after that), and now it's a Jimmy Johns. Now it does well because it has a drive through and delivers but for the better part of 20 years it was a revolving door of places.
Besides the years it was Primo's, that location (Now Francois) was empty for the longest time, was Kabuki (don't know if that ever even opened) and now the new place won't last a year.

In Bucktown the place at the corner of Lake Ave. and Old Hammond. I can't remember how many places have opened and closed there in the past 15 to 20 years.
I've heard the lease is too high and the owner is a pain in the arse to deal with, so that may add to the issue.
