Just read a book called the Kiterunner set in Afghanistan and it was interesting to look up the dishes they ate in the book. I really enjoy Middle Eastern cuisine but have never come across an Afghani restaurant in my travels. A lot of it seems to be more similar to Persian cuisine than Middle Eastern though. For those who have tried it what are some of your favorite dishes?

I haven't had Afghani food, but based on the cuisine I've had from surrounding areas, I assume I would enjoy it.

Have you had Persian food? I don't hear it talked about here much but it is incredible and a really complex cuisine.

Do you recall eating a flatbread stuffed with potatoes leeks and green onions? Can’t remember what it’s called but it sounds delicious. I just wonder if it something that is served with most meals. The recipe I looked at seemed pretty simple. I’ll try to friend and post it.

I have been to a couple and really enjoyed them. One does lots of stews and even some meat filled dumpling. I also liked this rice with golden raisins.

I used to travel to the Tampa area for about a week every month or so.. I came across a Persian buffet in Clearwater called Mirage . That is where I ha e sampled the bulk of my Persian dishes. They did a ton of the stews (khoresh) and a really good variety of rices. My favorite was rice with favs beans and fresh dill. (Baqala Polow)

Flames in Shreveport is called Flames Mediterranean Restaurant, but it really serves Persian food. Lots of grilled meats and veg, plus piles of basmati rice mixed with various herbs, fruits, and other ingredients.
The Mediterranean Sea is quite a way from Iran, but I guess the owner figured the average Shreveporter would be more likely to try it if he called it Mediterranean rather than Iranian or Persian.

Ate at an Afghan restaurant in St Louis 5 years ago - Sameem. Can’t remember what I ate, but the restaurant was very good. Reminded me more of Indian food.

Eaten it twice. Once in SF amd once in silicon Valley. Its an excellent and unique cuisine. They cook a lot with pumpkins and squashes. We always google to see if the big city we go to have an Afghan restaurant, but have had no luck outside of CA.

I’ve eaten at one Afghani restaurant on a trip to Boston. Helmand, in East Cambridge. The menu items I chose were all recommended by a work colleague. I would have had no idea what to choose, otherwise.
My favorite was a pumpkin dish called kaddo.
Kaddo
pan-fried then baked baby pumpkin seasoned with sugar and served on yogurt garlic sauce, topped with ground beef sauce
Also
Banjan
pan-fried eggplant seasoned with spices, then baked with fresh tomatoes, served on yogurt garlic mint sauce.
And my entree was a lamb dish, dwopiaza.
Dwopiaza
seasoned tenderloin of lamb cooked with onions, sauteed with yellow split peas and tossed with onions lightly marinated in vinegar. served with pallow rice.
I wouldn’t have remembered the names of the dishes, but I still have the notes on my phone from getting the recommendations and then I copied the descriptions of the dish from the online menu.

From my time spent in Afghanistan, I didn't find it very similar to Persian.
It was more Pakistani/Indian, than Persian.
