Or do you have to choose one or the other?

I’m a gas guy BTW and have been forever.

But...Last month I was at the beach and cooked dinner every night on a charcoal grill. It took some getting used to, but I didn’t hate the flavor.

So now I’m considering a charcoal grill to add to my smoker and propane grill. Specifically a cast aluminum model that I’ve been eying at Tubb’s Hardware.

Is it worth it? Anyone switch back and forth?

I prefer charcoal over gas. Had a gas grill and didn't use it much. If you want a low price charcoal grill then get a 22 inch Weber kettle grill. It's still my go-to charcoal pit.

That’s basically what I had at the beach.

ETA: imma be honest, the main thing I didn’t like was sitting there for 30 minutes waiting for the coals to get right. It wasn’t a big deal at the beach, but I can see it becoming annoying on a weeknight.

I use both regularly. Have a 2 burner Weber spirit propane and a kettle premium. Honestly only got the spirit because it was 1/2 price clearance at Target, but it’s really nice to be able to start it and go.

Propane gets used mostly during the week, and the kettle on weekends for long smokes or when I have more time.

The trick, for me, is to light the Primo and then go get the food ready...or make a drink if the food is ready...or get all the plates and whatnot out if im not drinking and the food is ready. Point is you have to just get the coals going first then do whatever else you need. They they are ready when you are.

I was 100% gas grill until I tried a Primo...then I did a full 180.

I have a half gas/ half charcoal grill....a Char-griller Duo brand/model. I use charcoal most the time but if I'm in a time pinch will use gas.

Solid advice. Great grill.

As far as waiting for the coals to be ready, use a charcoal chimney starter. Light it using two sheets of loosely crumpled newspaper. No fumes, no aftertaste. I light the grill, then prep my food. It's ready when I am.

I have far for grilling and a smoker which I can open the hatch and cook burgers and stuff on. I mainly use the gas though.

Agree with chimney starter. I wad up 2-3 paper Towels dabbed in some oil and it gets it going quick.

Or just put the chimney over your propane grill’s side burner, if you have one.

I have both. A Weber Genesis II and a Char-Griller from Kroger (will probably upgrade to a 22in Weber kettle soon, though). I also have a WSM for smoking. I love charcoal, but gas has its advantages as well.

I was always charcoal guy until this last spring. I still have 2 charcoal grills(big boy and a Weber) and a coal smoker, but I use the gas grill on weeknights to throw the pork chops or chicken on to get them done quickly.

I find using a grill mat on the gas grill keeps the meat from drying out.

ETA:
But all my charcoal grills and smoker I like the cast iron grates that lock in the flavor better.

Do not do it, bought one a few years ago at academy and they are POS.

I gave it to my son who thought it was the bee's knees till he used it and then he gave it away as well.

Charcoal side did not seal and the gas part will not get hot enough to be of any use, and that was out of the box.

After a few uses the whole thing warped and there were large gaps around the doors.
