Angelo Brocato has passed away

a true New Orleans icon whose family introduced the city to Italian pastries (spumoni, gelato, cannoli, etc..) in 1905. I grew up 2 blocks from the Brocatos and played sports with their kids. My brother and NB are still very good friends. During our birthdays, Mr. Angelo would provide each family member with a dozen cannoli's as he refused my dad's money. Such a great family ... RIP Mr Angelo

While vacationing in Sicily some years ago I made it a point to sample some of the classic Italian ice creams and pastries I would get at Angelo Brocato’s for the purpose of doing a taste test. They were delicious but no better than the ones I can get on Carrollton Avenue.
RIP.

His Tiramisu is not bad either
My grandfather and great grandfather would hit him up for fresh cuccidati back when he was still in the FQ. I still have at least a bag of his Cuccidati in the pantry.

Boston has all the famous places and I don't think the canollis come close to Brocatos

The line is out the door for the gelato in the summertime.

I remember when the Brocato family had a store on McShane Pl. near Esplanade years ago.
We would either stop there or at Binder's Bakery on St. Claude near Franklin Ave. for hot French bread on the way to visit my relatives that lived uptown on Magazine St. near Napoleon.

RIP. I grew up eating their spumoni at Giamanco’s.
Giamanco’s and Brocato’s on Carrollton both served it on a little doily.
I have a tub of their spumoni in the freezer and will have some in his memory

Played at Delta, lived on Beron, went to school at St. Martin’s , frequently ate at Come Back Inn & Coopers Donuts

My Mom went to school with Mickey, who is Angelo's little sister. Anytime we were around them Mr. Angelo was always so funny and nice. He will be missed.

Did a Sunday NOLA trip with the family - ate lunch at Parkway, visited a few museums/galleries, then, before we left town, stopped by Brocato's. Mr. Arthur was there as I shared my condolences with the family. Mr. Angelo was a great storyteller with a big smile, and always had a Daily Racing Form since he loved betting on the horses.
