Every store does this in Germany (where Aldi is from). You insert .50, 1 or 2 euro coins to get a cart, and then get it back when you return the cart. There are never carts strewn about anywhere.

How often do most people still have a quarter in their pocket? Seems pretty rare for me these days.

I remember there being a store that did this when I was a kid, Real Superstore maybe? As a kid I'd scan the parking lot for any abandoned carts to get the quarter and get a bubblegum or something. I'd imagine the same would apply to kids today.

I just got back from my first Aldi visit here in Lafayette. The store is pretty much the same as every other Aldi except they carry Zapps chips.
Cost effective and decent produce, and other things at lower prices. I was entertained by the woman in front of me grumbling that she had to bag her own groceries AND pay 11 cents for a bag lol. Of course there were people who were perplexed as to how the cart system worked. Only two checkout lanes open with carts eight deep, until they opened up a third lane. Made Rouses checkout look like a cakewalk. I'm assuming that the amount of business was due to the grand opening.
My biggest takeaway is that it's in a horrible location as far as leaving headed North. It took me ten minutes to leave the parking lot and take a left on Ambassador. It wouldn't have been so bad but the folks of Lafayette don't know that you shouldn't drive into an intersection unless you know you can get through it. I waited two cycles of green arrows with clueless people parked in that Capital One intersection in front of me.

Was that the yellow and black store where the grand theater is now?
If so, that place had some awesome cookies. Of course, I was 6, so all cookies were kind of awesome. If I was good, my mom would pick up one for me and my brother. She even let us eat them in the car.

Aldi...has a shelf life of about 2 years in Lafayette in its current location . Once Marist builds the new Rouses at the corner of Camillia and Verot School Rd...church will be out for Aldi, Albertson's and Fresh Market...and for someone to say that go to Aldi before going to HEB...well that person just ain't right...

Having never been to Aldi’s, I can’t speak to its future, but people said Fresh Market would die once Whole Foods opened, and it hasn’t. Albertson’s has survived with Whole Foods, Fresh Market, and Costco nearby. I wouldn’t count it out just yet.

If paying $0.89 cents for the same raspberries that are $2.89 at HEB is wrong, than I don't want to be right.
Or $2 for the same strawberries.
Or $0.49 for an avocado.
Or less than $2.00 for eggs.
There is no quality difference here. I'm not buying ribeyes at Aldi, or any dry goods for the most part. Just the same products I'd buy anyway. Just cheaper. I can live with that shame.

So you burning 3.25 gas to go save 20 cents on raspberries and strawberries...50 cents on eggs if that.....HEB has better quality it more than makes up for the price...You buy 90% of your groceries at HEB ...don't get why you would ...I checked out Aldi yesterday..prices are lower but the price per serving or oz's are higher...read da package and know what your buying...I was with some produce people last weekend in McAllen..they said produce prices are going up all time high prices ....limes, lemons and onions are fixing to be luxury items...
