What’s the scoop on this place? From the pictures posted by DL, it looks pretty legit to me.

I think the general consensus here is that its cheap and low quality. I vehemently disagree. I love mine. Good produce, Italian meats, good salmon and steelhead trout, crazy cheap dairy products, alot of wine.

I do an Aldi run while on my way to HEB just to shrink my shopping list a bit for a much cheaper price. It's also the fastest in & out when I need to pick up just a few things. The quality may vary by location, but my location is great.

It sucks. Shitty selection of generic products. I don't understand why people go crazy over it. One opened right down the road from our house and we walked in and looked around for 20 minutes and never went back.

I have friends from other places who love it. I think it depends on your expectations of what it is, so I’m going to try to have an open mind. Red bag chicken is something I know they rave about.

I plan to give them a shot. It’s right next to my kids schools so will be convenient.

Let’s take a vacation day and check it out like we did for the Whole Foods grand opening.

Doesn’t look like it.

Will be checking it out though, and whatever red bag chicken is.

I am going to give it a little so the masses can thin out.

Those breaded filets are great. Pair them with the brioche buns they sell and it’s a great sandwich.

For anyone not in the know, bring a physical quarter to release your shopping cart, which you get back when you return it. This may sound silly but it keeps them from having to pay someone to round up carts in the lot all day. Not sure about the Lafayette location, but they box your groceries in the same boxes that the dry goods arrive in. They also have their own "brand name". Those savings are why your bill will be cheaper than other places. The produce isn't bad at all and also cost effective.

The retirees in Florida go nuts over Aldi.

One of the few non-discounted items, but still worth it. They are a staple at my house.

I've always wondered how well this works. Most people in today's age wouldn't care much about a quarter, especially anyone too lazy to put their cart back. Are there enough people walking it back up for their quarter to eliminate the need for cart employees?

EDIT - I return my cart everywhere.. not meaning to imply I do not or that you shouldn't. Just wondering how well the quarter incentivizes others.

Interesting. I go to HEB so I am curious as to what you find cheaper at Aldi.

I’ve only been to their stores in clean, middle class areas… but I’ve never seen anyone leave a cart in the parking lot. And if someone were to do that, another person would want the quarter enough to return it.

Produce of any sort. Snacks (nuts, cookies, chips, dried fruit, etc.), anything dairy (milk, butter, creamer), eggs, cheese. Kids frozen meals like waffles and nuggets.

Meat is cheaper, but I definitely prefer HEB on that. I don't like their ground meat or beef products at all. But the fish is solid. Pork ribs were just ok.

Eta: also sugar & flour.
