When I was at LSU in the mid to late '70's a kid named Sammy used to hang with our group at a lot of the LSU Football games. I just can't quite remember his last name after all these years but I understood him to be the son of the owner of LaFonda's. I recall him to be a good guy.
His last name is Karides. He's my uncle. The woman in the article is my mom. Clearly, they grew up at the restaurant and it's a bittersweet moment. La Fonda has been a part of the family their entire lives. My grandfather, Tony Karides, was an original owner and he passed away in the early 80s, about the time my mom and uncle moved from BR.
As much as I'd like to hash out the truthful details to counter the false information that's been posted in this thread and threads before, this isn't the venue to do so. All that I will note is as with most anything posted on this message board, take what xLxSxUxFxAxNx posted with skepticism.

Also sorry to mention it here but my go to Tex-Mex place is El Rio Grande right down the road. I've been going there since 1969 and the food is every bit as good now as it was then. Same great people, same great dishes
I live in Alabama, but I come to Baton Rouge pretty frequently to visit my girlfriend. Haven't found many restaurants that I really think are that great down there, and I'm always looking for a new diamond in the rough. If I go to El Rio Grande, what do you recommend?

Paul Bako dad was a waiter or maitre d not sure which
His dad Gabe, was an owner and front house manager. Was forced out. Someone pretty much summed the scenario up perfectly in a previous post.

you obviously aren't looking very hard....
For 12 years I worked nearby Lafondas... was decent and yest it declined some over the years....
Rio Grande Raoul's place... is good.. authentic... actually I like Lafonda's better.....
first trip to Lafondas coincided w my first LSU game... sad to see it go...

Ok...I'll put my faith in the first of you to spill the bean dip and taco meat recipe.
Go!

The place was damn good until about the mid 80s and started steadily sliding after that .. It ain't hard to do the math ... X'ies is pretty much spot on for those of us that grew up around the place .. Sorry ..

so tell us where you grew up and when your family decided to move and "help out" the restaurant.

Agreed Rag, mid to late 1980s was the last era it was "on"..solid meat tacos etc..Mrs Despo ran a quality joint..it's been cheesy greasy since early to mid 1990s on forward.
For folks that are fans of stripped-down basic Mexican/non-fusion/more Mex-less Tex, like LaFonda when at their best, there is still El Rio Grande, Carlos, La Tiendita, La Morenita, Mi Pueblito, La Reyna(Honduran)..etc..

Well I used to eat at that location when it was The Black Angus so that's showing my age.

Whew! Got worried that this was the Lafayette location
I have never understood the love for the FOOD at La Fonda in Lafayette ? Other than being the society hangout for drinking the food leaves a lot to be desired.

it's been terrible for years now. Surprised it made it this long.

My brother in-law is Womack and the grandson of one of the owners. I asked him one time for both the bean dip and beef recipes and he wouldn't give it up. He said he had to make the dip when he was a kid and it wasn't fun at all.

I grew up going there also, starting at Plank and Airline location. Bean dip is awesome! Mrs. Womack was great fun. Annette is great too.
