Been watching some mixology stuff recently and it’s usually a part of a larger recipe but at times they’re just like “throw nutmeg and sugar into the drink” or “throw a pear into that drink.”

I’d love to buy some Christmasy spices and add them into my drinks over Christmas but I guess I’m unprincipled in it. Anyone got any advice or material?

I'd have to imagine it's pretty easy to infuse different spirits, vodka likely being the easiest.

If you like bourbon just look up infused bourbon recipes for instance.

I’m not really thinking of infusing though.

More like, “ok, I want to add honey into my nightcap tonight, so what liquor will I use that for”

I turn my old fashioneds into Christmas old fashioneds by adding 2 cloves and a cinnamon stick to the drink.

My 86 year old father-in-law got a gin making kit three years ago. He converts vodka into gin on the reg by steeping it in juniper and other aromatics. I have to admit, it tastes as good as something off the shelf.

One of my sisters got my mom a gin making kit for Christmas last year, she's made some decent stuff. I thought about getting her a tonic making kit this year, but ended up doing something else.

Start with a little of a single spice and go from there. Don't get cute and add a bunch of shite all at once. Add, taste, learn. Use that information for the next time.

There’s something magical about vodka and pineapple.
