Same thing happened in Missouri/Illinois. Farm land was flooded to avoid flooding a small town. When its population vs. wildlife...population wins.

Have you ever been to Cairo, Illinois? The drowned wildlife in the Birds Point - New Madrid Floodway led more productive lives. They fed themselves.

It seems that all caution is thrown to the wind now that the Morganza will be opened. Its unfair that man will make water divert on to someone else to protect precious N.O and Baton Rouge. I guess I am just venting because it affects me and my way of life and how I make a living.

If man had not diverted the Mississippi with the Control Structure, the Mississippi would be freely flowing down the Atchafalaya and the Port of Baton Rouge and New Orleans would be non existent. Thus Nature would have ruined mans way of life 40 years ago.

We got it... Cairo bad, BPNM Floodway farmers and wildlife good.

Cairo sucks. It's a decrepit, decaying and dilapitated town of ~2,500 lazy, unemployed, and felonious POSs waiting on their next Gubmint check.

In their infinite wisdom, and despite all evidence to the contrary, the Corps arbitrarily decided to flood 130,000+ acres of fertile heartland, bankrupting the poor farmers in the BPNM Floodway.

Ain't this a bitch?

Do you think they just flipped a coin and the BPNM side of the river lost?

Sounds like an area of S. Louisiana we are all familiar with.

If you are implying North BR, then you are dead on correct.

Well the truth is that is the way the water would go naturally if we humans didn't keep it in its original channel.

I'm sorry you are going to be affected by this. That sucks.

Except that there are about a hundred thousand lazy, unemployed, and felonious POSs waiting on their next Gubmint check in N.O., not 2,500. Besides, haven't you heard? All our real trash lives in BR and Houston these days! Ask anyone who lives in either place.

And, as an added bonus, we've got Glassman and Cosmo adding some merit to the situation.

So that would put the unemployment rate in NOLA at around 30%. Gotcha dumbass. Jesus Christ, how can a person be this stupid? Do you take Lee Chatelain, Tyger Ryno or Bayou stupid pills at night?

There's much more than 2,500 in NBR.

We have one of the lowest unemployment rates of any big city in the country. Sounds like you are a racist or a douche....or both.

It's called sarcasm. I'm pretty sure you're familiar with it.

I don't really think the unemployment rate in Orleans Parish is 30%, it's closer to 8%. REAL unemloyment is probably in the neighborhood of 12% to 13%. If you look at things objectively, I'm sure you'd agree that there are certain areas of New Orleans where crime is a problem. And I'm not just talking about a hipster smoking a fattie on the front porch.

Having said that, my comments were primarily directed at Rhode Island Red. He has been bitching about the worthless residents of Cairo, IL for over a week now. (No one pays any taxes, because they're all retirees or crackheads. The whole place is falling down on itself. Etc.)

Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

Love it or hate it but the lives of 10000s of people and the Ports of N.O. and BR are WAY more important assets than some people's land.

People should not be surprised by any of this. Morganza spillway was designed specifically for this. Corps is following pre-determined criteria. I know it will suck for some but it is what it is.

Which is why I am a little frustrated with the pussy footing about opening the Morganza. They know what will happen if they don't so why put that much more strain on the levees. Start relieving it now!

What I heard from Scott Angelle (Sec of DNR) yesterday in a meeting was that if they let the area behind the spillway fill up too soon, it won't take the crest as readily (backpressure?), so they are kind of saving the opening. They also learned their lesson from 1973 when they threw everything open and it caused scouring and almost kept them from closing it, so the gates will be opened VERY slowly, possible taking up to 72 hours, so the flow's impact on the area right around the structure is lessened.
