Removing the fact that humans and businesses will be devestated by this which sucks, is anyone else in Awe of the fact that we may witness the mighty mississip change course completely? If it does, that changes the game entirely. Just amazing the awesome power of nature.

Hopefully I am not the only one that will be interested in this:
Does anyone know where I could start calling NOW to register volunteer or help etc? I'm just a student at LSU so I don't have anything to offer other than manual labor (in a situation like this), but for instance if they needed help bagging sand I'd be there. After Katrina my church had chainsaw crews, and I think they just sent some to Alabama... that type of stuff. But also locations to send food, clothing, etc.
Basically I was hoping to compile How You Can Help information that we could disseminate on here BEFORE the worst happens, so if it does indeed happen we can react as soon as possible.

i'll ask my supervisors tomorrow and see what they say, but right now it seems as though the general public should hold off on doing anything. I have heard a few contracts will be issued in the next few days for emergency response so it is likely that the public's efforts will not be needed( at least i hope it doesn't get this bad). also, sand bags are extremely inefficient to use.i don't even know they still use these when they have hesco baskets and front end loaders....

I would appreciate the response/info. And sandbags was more of a generalization. Anyway to help kind of thing. If you happen to remember, email me at wavingwilly@gmail.com
And yea hopefully the public wont be needed, but after Katrina... I just remember all that worked were text messages even if you weren't in Louisiana. Frustrating wanting to help and not even be able to ask where to go.
Just in case...
So far my ideas are churches, salvation army, red cross, lsu volunteer. Donations will probably be more valuable than anything.

Just heard the water topped the road going to the Ferry in St Francisville. I was there yesterday and it was about a foot away. A long way to go before this is over.

Yes. Its insane to think about how different things would be if the river bypassed BR and New Orleans.

OK people, this is the word I got today. Sorry I can't give out the names of were my info is coming from. The Morganza spillway will be open next Wensday or Thursday. The word will be passed out tomorrow some time. They will pull 87 locks open. Highway La 1 will be close till all gates are open and to make sure the bridge will not wash away.
As I write this, there are all kinds of men working at the locks. I'm talking a shite load of them. Also the levee on the east side of the Morganza spillway is getting eating away from the Mississippi River. The Corp has install a shite load of sandbags(those very big ones by trucks and choppers) and the river has washed many of them away at this time.
Not looking good!

There was a Ponchatoula Levee Board officer (didn't even know they had those) on the levee just down from Lake Beau Pre yesterday evening (and there's one there today, but across the road at the horse farm). It seems some dumbass kids were riding ATVs around the sandbagged area there.
I asked him how far they thought the river was going to rise, his response was that they think it will get about 10 feet from topping the levee there, 6 feet from topping the levee downtown.

Fishfighter, could you tell me more about the E side of the Morganza spillway being eaten away by the Miss? I am a regular in that area and can't figure out what levee you are referring to. Downstream of teh Spillway is dry at this time. Behind the spillway (the forebay) is pretty much still water at this point. What levee are you referring to?

Yes. I feel the same way about hurricanes, as well.

Know the high levee inbetween the Forbay and the Mississippi river(East side of the forbay? The Mississippi river makes one hell of a turn there south right before it comes in view of La 1.

with them opening up the spillway will that make it so BR doesn't flood? I live kinda near the levee and am slightly worried
EDIT:
More specific location, The area around LSU campus, are we pretty much screwed?

By openning the Morganza spillway, that will drop the Mississippi river level by 1' in Baton Rouge.
