Picked up a pair of Clifton 7 today at a local store that had them for $89.99. Needed a good recovery shoe. My Peg 37 are about done.

So it's been a couple of months now with the Puma lineup refresh. Has anyone tried them out?

I have never been heavy in the shoe game but I am looking for a half-ish distance race day shoe. NB Fuelcell Rebel V2 looks pretty solid, but I would definitely like some suggestions.

I train in Adrenaline GTS 21 to help with pretty severe overpronation but miss the cushion of other shoes.

I didn't want to start a new thread so figured I would post in here, hopefully not a hijack.

Background:

Wore Brooks for around 5 years, then Hokas for 2 years, then switched to Altra Lone Peaks last fall.

Liked the Brooks in general, loved the Hokas except the shite tread and midsoles going flat too quickly. Altras would be a perfect fit (zero blisters, tread like super glue) except for one thing.

Since I switched I have had soreness in my heels, arches, and balls of both feet. Initially I wrote it off as "zero drop break in" but the soreness has persisted for 6+ months now.

It is worse when I run on rocky terrain (80% of the time) vs road/groomed trails. Usually pain doesn't set in until several hours after run. Last Sunday at about mile 5 into a 12 miler the pain kicked in so bad that I had to walk/shuffle/cuss the rest of the way.

I have been in an almost permanent state of low grade soreness on the heels/arches mostly since switching shoes. Worse when getting up after sitting or laying down.

A brief google diagnosis leads me to think I may have plantar fasciitis. Or maybe the Lone Peaks just lack the proper cushion for rocky desert terrain.

Can anyone diagnosis my pain and/or recommend a good trail shoe (wide toe box, great tread preferred). Don't really have a preference for zero drop one way or the other. Loved the cloud like cushion of Hokas but they just wore out too fast and tended to lead to knee/Achilles pain.

Thanks for any help.

This would be the appropriate thread IMO.

Altras did the same to me. I never got used to them even though I think it’s a great brand. Really wish they entered at least the low drop market. Anyhow, after retiring 2 pair of Escalantes, I’m out of the no drop game. Some folk will insist that you change your cadence, gait, and form to accommodate the shoe because they insist that it’s better for you based on science that does not exist and solely on the argument that “people lived without shoes for...” and that’s bull jizzle.

With that rant over, if you are not prone to injuries with your natural style of running, changing form and going to a different shoe style probably isn’t a good idea.

I’m curious what Hokas. I know the speed goat is always at the top of every trail runner’s list. Skechers go run razor trail might be worth checking out, great ride on the go run series but durability can be an issue (outsole). Also since you mentioned Brooks, have you checked out the new Catamount? Similar nitrogen infused Eva as Skechers. I’ve ran on this type of mid sole for probably a couple thousand miles now and usually get at least 400 per pair if the outsole holds up.

Edit: I guess I should provide credentials... 40 year old road runner that will get a trail once in a while that puts in about 80 a week and can still rock a sub 17 5K.

Pig P

when you say tread are you wanted sticky grip for technical trail or tread durability? If grip from what I've read I don't think the sketchers BRM mention are a good option. Not sure if they even have a rock plate. The Brooks catamount from what the shoe rep told me last week they are basically a race day shoe for fast trails. Putting them on they feel like a road shoe. I'm struggling to find a trail shoe that feels more road-ish but can still be cushioned enough to go long distance (50+ miles). everything is mega-ultra-uber cushion with zero ground feel. Reading good things about Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra. More road feel with good grip and enough cushion to hit 50K if not too technically. Even though I hate their laces may have to give the New Salomon Ultra glide a look but they aren't out until July. Also give La Sportiva a glance.

Shoe-xpert credentials - Slightly older than BRM, can't run close to a 17 min 5k and run trails when I have to which is now since I'm registered for Superior 100 in Sept.

I read durability not technical which why I went the direction I did. The shoes he mentioned are kinda soft so my suggestions were based on that as well. The Terrex is a beast and a lot of shoe. Good suggestion. That lightstrike in the forefoot is gonna be firm as frick tho.

Edit: noticed neither of us mentioned Nike, lol. I’ve owned the Pegasus trail and the Wildhorse which I wouldn’t recommend anyone run in. They both look good in the garage though.

Nike trail..... love hate relationship. 2 weeks ago I threw out my wildhorse 5 after running a muddy 50k. I put 500ish miles on them overall. they have decent rock plate and toe bumper and fairly easy to run in as long as its dry. get that tread wet and good luck. No clue how the current model 6&7 are with the new upper but the tread didn't change. If I see a pair for $50 i'd pick them up again knowing they are good for dry packed dirt trails and can handle some pavement too.

Thanks for the replies.

Brooks Cascadia and Caldera. Hoka Challenger and Torrent.

The Torrent was probably my favorite shoe I've ever worn, but the tread wasn't ideal for the rocks encountered in desert/sky island trail I typically run on. I think the Speedgoat may be the Hoka shoe I am looking for.

Or perhaps I need to just get ~3 pairs with different specialties rather than one shoe for all occasions. The stubborn part of me just wants that one magical show that does it all

I'll look into the Speedgoat and Catamount next, thanks for the recs.

I'll give these a looks as well. Right now I am in the 4-6 mile short run and 10-15 mile long run range. An ultra is the long term goal but not until late fall or next spring.

I've heard these run on the narrower side and unfortunately I have big ol Flintstone feet.

I know several on here really like the Saucony Endorphin line so if you are looking for trail shoes this might be your solution. Out some time in July?

LINK

I picked up a pair of Adidas Terrex Speed Ultras so once I have a few miles in them I'll report back. Back Country had them 25% off.

I haven't worn Nike in forever, but I tried on a pair of React Milers at the store the other day and immediately fell in love. I went home and ordered a 1/2 size larger than what I tried in the store. They felt awesome this morning for my little recovery run. I can't wait to try them out on one of my long runs.

I also got some Altra Paradigms for easy running. I need to trouble shoot a small issue with them, but I am really impressed with them other than that so far.

This was timely. Came here looking for a good break in routine to transition from my 4 drop shoes to Altras. Getting the same heel pains as you described and occasionally a numb foot. I’ve found that doing calf raises and Achilles stretch are helping. Just wondering how long this process takes?

Every time I’ve tried to change shoe drop, I’ve blown something up.

ETA: Currently running in my Altras one day a week on my light day of 4-5 miles.

Got my NB Rebel 2’s in yesterday. Feel amazing so far. My regular rotation trainers have morphed into all NB. Love what they are doing with both FF and FC.

4mm to 0 shouldn’t be that big of a transition. Honestly, you might be best suited for a slight raise in the heel. I love Altras, but they probably are t best for everyone. No point in trying to force it if you are happy with you 4mm drops.

I tried some New Balances (12 drop I think). Within a week, the IT Band near my left knee was unbearable. Threw them away and it was fine again in two weeks.

The Fuel Cell TC and RC Elite are a mainstay in my rotation. I tried the Rebel 2's but ended up with the Clifton 7 for every day shoes because I just liked the feel better.

New Balance FF and FC is as close to ZoomX as you can get. As much as I enjoy my Saucony E Speed, I hated the Shift as the every day shoe.

Kballa / T-Roots

what would you say the Rebel v2 compares to best? My Speeds are nearing the end and I'm not sure if the Sketcher Razor excess is good for me beyond 6 miles and or speed work.

I found the Rebel V2 very soft but responsive. I found them softer than the speeds but that is probably due to the plate in the speeds. I think they are closer to the Invincible than the Speeds.
