How big is the drop-off defensively from Milazzo to Travinski?

Milazzo is a stud behind the plate but his offense is essentially nonexistent. I realize it's a little smaller sample size, but he's hitting .160 and his OB% is .208. Travinski is hitting .265 but OB% of .405. He's at least drawing some walks when he's up there.

This is a legitimate question, but how common is it for teams to have dudes in there almost exclusively for their defense?

Just my two cents, but even if Travinski isn't as good as Milazzo behind the plate, at least he's giving you some offense.

Below are their stats - someone tell me what I'm missing. Both of them strike out a ton so that stat is kind of a wash.

I don’t think they believe Travinski can catch a full weekend right now. He is still coming back from an injury that kept him from catching for an extended period of time.

The way they keep getting hit in the jimmies , they probably each telling the other one, “ you go out there”.....

Milazzo is a good catcher, but he doesn’t control the game like elite ones do.

With that being said, he’s obviously better than HT on defense. I don’t think HT is a complete buffoon though. I’d like to see how he develops with consistent playing time

May be just me.. but when milazzo is not in the game it just makes me uncomfortable. Travinsky Has missed fastballs right down the pipe

Milazzo has great pop behind the plate.

Can we let the pitchers hit and DH for Milazzo?

I like the potential of Travinski but he is the best example of the problem just about every hitter on the team has.

They are having trouble with top-level SEC breaking balls as is somewhat expected for inexperienced hitters.

Travinski's OBP is only .067 in SEC games (1 walk and no hits in 14 ABs) In all games he has 8 walks and 9 hits in 34 ABs).

Non-SEC competition is throwing more fastballs and breaking balls that are much more hittable.

It is not just Travinski. Crews OBP is .474 overall but only .324 in SEC games.

Catcher is still the one spot in baseball that you can stay in the lineup if you are elite defensively but not so much on offense. Middle defense (SS and CF) used to be that way back in the day too, you did not have to hit as much if you were a plus defender, now everybody is expected to hit well

And its not just about pop time/controlling the run game, it's about blocking balls up, no PB/WP/extra bases, and a good catcher can steal a few strikes every game with his receiving skills.

Milazzo's receiving hasn't been great this year. He's elite from a blocking and throwing perspective. He doesn't seem to be as dialed in with pitchers from an intensity standpoint.

Travinski doesn't receive great either. He can throw some, but not at Milazzo's level. His blocking needs a lot of work. Travinski lives and dies with the pitchers on every pitch.

Travinski is far better at the plate right now, but I've seen some hope with Milazzo.

I'm kind of okay with them swapping back and forth. Give them each chances, since they each have strengths and weaknesses. What I hate is trying to time the "defensive" games for Milazzo.

Might be oversimplification, but is Travinskis bat worth more runs than his glove costs you? Probably so.

With the way this team is playing, I’m not sure that even matters.

When a baserunner steals second against Travinski I know I have time for a glass of water before Travinski is on his feet and ready to throw. His ‘pop time” is a minute.

He allows a lot of passed balls, but he frames far better than Milazzo - when he doesn’t drop it.

Hell No! Against Alcorn State? Sure. Against Jack Leiter? Not a chance in the world.
