McGlothern is a 4 star and a true freshmen. They aren’t all Stingley and Ricks and that can’t be the barometer.
The real issue is that we have 0 CBS on the team from the 17 and 18 classes that should be plying while Ward and Flott develop.

Honest question, what did Mcglothern do to make you think he should start or play more? I just saw him in a few times but didn’t see him make a play or stand out in any way.
Honest answer. I don't even remember specific plays, but there was one time in the 4th quarter where he did something good and I was like... Who's number 2? Then there was another play where he was involved and I said, hey there's 2 again and he turned around and I saw it was McGlothern. And I was glad and thought, oh, cool, maybe he'll be good.
Grasping at straws? Maybe. But, that's about all I got right now.
I'm reminded of Red...
But I prefer to live like Andy...
And then my inner critic is like...

He didn’t get burnt or lose an assignment. He is tall and has added very good weight. He has an instinct for the ball in his HS film and played well in the All American bowl against the best talent. He looks like an LSU corner and not the skinny runts we have playing there now (not counting Stingley and Ricks). He is true freshman...in other words he is not a complete project like the others!

I would also like to see more of McGlothern but it also makes me wonder why he hasn’t been on the field much to begin with. Is it because guys like Ward have more experience? Does McGlothern not know the playbook?
Just curious, but what do y’all think?

Learning a defensive scheme without a real, traditional spring and summer camp is hard for anyone. Especially the freshman

It’s an incorrect assumption that high school players stay 4 years. Many never play and are gone in 1-2 years.

It's because he is a true freshmen and was going to take some time anyway

Yeah but I don’t think being a true freshman is why though. If he’s truly better than Ward and Evans and some of those other guys, why wasn’t he playing?

Maybe learning the scheme
Flott was always going to play over him with his experience

Well you are wrong. Like someone said no spring or fall camp and learning something totally different. Plus the fact of owning returning players the benefit of doubt. Think of how long they allowed #18 to stink up that position. Also, remember Greedy? My guess is he should of played a little sooner than he did and he took a redshirt.

Most guys aren’t day one ready like Stingley and Ricks. It usually takes time for freshmen to emerge. Add in the lack of a proper camp and switching schemes and there are plenty of reasons.
The fact that McGlothern is getting on the field now likely reflects that he is performing better than expected in practice.
I’m not giving up on Flott and Ward, either. They have both made enough plays to hope they will improve and take a step with a real off-season in 2021.
Improvement at safety would make a world of difference and it looks like this class could have a big impact. The CBs have 0 margin for error right now because of all the suspect play there.

He also got burned a couple times in his short stint in the game (including his very first play IIRC). You're correct, however--he was at least unafraid to go stick his hat in there and actually tackle the ballcarrier, unlike the rest of our secondary. Seriously i dk what happened this season but every single member of our secondary became legitimately afraid of tackling. It's been some of the most pathetic effort i've ever seen

No they don’t. We’ll have great talent there next year. We need big guys on both sides of the ball.

Stingley made some good tackles during the game.

I wished they had showed a wider angle of this play. I was curious what happened for the receiver to get that open. I know McGlothern was chasing the receiver, but it was strange that Flott was the other guy who was right there. Kind of made me feel like this was some kind of coverage bust.

I'd like to see Ward get minutes at safety

Shanahan was a year 1 starter for us? He obviously wasn’t going to be a world beater but he certainly wasn’t a wasted scholly.
