Recruiting rankings have been right the last few years. We used to do great at hitting on lower ranked CBs but Raymond’s non-obvious picks lately have been what recruiting services said they were.

Guys like Ward, Flott, McGlothern etc. DBU must do better.

Some safeties that can cover are a more immediate concern

CB overall is a strength going into next year

Lester please elaborate if you have time. This is going to be a huge week long discussion about positions. I say that because the safety class this year and next year.

McGlothern looked pretty decent today. He has the size unlike the other sticks we have playing back there.

Well let’s start by saying there have been a bunch of busted coverages. That isn’t indicative of talent. CB is fine, but when Vincent opted out, it forced Stevens into more of a traditional safety role. He’s essentially a LB, so that obviously is not ideal.

Hampton has provided nothing

Harris has done nothing thru 3 seasons.

Good safety coverage allows more wiggle room with the CBS. The CB talent is there, the safety talent is lacking

Radaryious jones is probably a bust

I agree safety is the immediate concern but it's going to be the year after.
Ricks
Floot
Ward
McGlothern
Wiggins
They need to flip McGhee

CB’s shouldn’t be judged through 1.5 seasons

It’s generally a position where year 3 is the sweet spot

He & Flott came in somewhat as projects, knowing they were more of year 3 guys than immediate contributors.

I do think they prob need another corner

But I think Ryan is a corner imo.

Langlois has some corner coverage traits too

You are proving my point.
Flott had to start last year and this year.
So, you want to wait 3 years to see if jones pans out?
He can't even get on the field this year

Stingley and ricks - yes

Dlott, ward, mcglotherb are not. None of them have shown ability to be worth a championship defense.

No you aren't looking at this the right way. Those type of guys were never supposed to be early contributors. We lost Joseph the year before last, Vincent opted out, and we missed out on both Goodrich and Surtain. Guys like Flott and Ward shouldn't have been playing major snaps til next year.

All it took for this situation to happen was to lose one guy in a class and for two others to leave the program before we thought they would. It's crazy how hard it's been to pull in more than one early contributer at corner in the last two classes.

That's restarted considering offenses now these days are so explosive. You need to have corners that can come in immediately and play at a high level.

Flott, ward are not answers

Next year will have

Stingley
Ricks
Wiggins
Ryan
Flott
Ward
McGlothern

That's a solid group

Flott played like 160 snaps last year

Had Vincent returned this year like he was supposed to, Flotts role would not be as big with the emergence of Ricks

He’d be your 4th corner

With another season of playing time, & more importantly, body development, he will be a serviceable corner in year 3.

I don’t care about Jones really. He could transfer in the offseason, or he could carve a small role next year. He needed multiple years in a college weight program & missed precious time there with Covid this offseason. We just don’t know

Vincent could've easily gone to the league.
That's probably why he opted out.
Vincent should've gone in the draft anyway.
He opted out cause he realized he made the wrong decision

You are still starting a true freshmen
You shouldnt have to start a true freshmen every year.

That's the point.
Now if that true freshmen beats out an upperclassmen than fine

They have started freshmen at CB the past two years & they have played great

I’m not sure how many freshmen & sophomores you think come into college & play lights out but I can certainly say it is much less than you think

Both Ward & Flott have flashed enough competency for me to say that I will enjoy watching them grow going forward

I don’t know what game you were watching but McGlothern looked like he belongs. I’m not saying is is shut down but he is a true freshman who was rail thin coming out of high school. He looks like he’s put on good weight and has the length. Those other skinny arse CB’s we have will never cover anyone and they can’t keep up either.
