I like how this has turned out to be the best of dubbed movies! Nice work. I even found a couple.

If it is an originally foreign flick, I always watch them sub titled.
I can’t stand dubbed versions in English. I even get annoyed if it’s a film located in a different country and they’re still speaking English (Chernobyl).

Das Boot
For folks who are new to foreign language films, Das Boot is a classic and an absolute must watch. It completely holds up today. Elite level storytelling, to the point that you almost immediately forget that you’re reading subtitles because the story and the tension just completely suck you in. Highly recommended for all

I can't imagine anyone claiming to be a movie fan having not seen a foreign movie. Its like someone only listening to top 40 pop music their whole life and then hearing Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin and saying "You can do that with music?"

This is true, but my first watch is always the native tongue.
I actually think both PM and Naussica have better English dubs. Spirited Away is a push - both solid.

I have not seen Naussica non-dubbed so I couldn’t comment, but I have seen Spirited Away (again quite a few times) non-dubbed, and I thought about including it with Mononoke, but I consider both the dub and the original as equals. Nothing in the original makes me yearn for the dub and vice versa. Both are excellent.

I think the English dubs of Miyazaki films are the best dubs one could ever hope to have. But I've read enough about translation changes to dubs (especially in Castle in the Sky) that I still seek out the originals.

If we're being honest, there are probably many here who wouldn't claim to be movie fans.
Not including OP in that sentiment. When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought "how can that be a thing", but we all come by our movie tastes from different backgrounds and ages. Assuming OP is not a teenager, he found foreign films later in his movie fandom, and it's awesome that he's loved and embraced them.
Also awesome that he's promoting the incredible services of Criterion Channel.

I watched Grave of the Fireflies subtitled not too long ago. It's a great movie everyone that should watch once, but I don't think I'll ever watch it again.

Not only is my hearing not what it used to be but it seems like sound editing has gotten a bit iffy over the years. It just seems more common to have lines partially talked over or obscured by background noise. Which gets really annoying. I always turn on CC.

I watch a lot of movies with subtitles. Doesn't bother me a bit.

Probably most recently Downfall, but yeah many of the giant foreign films are much better in their original language, although I do have to concentrate on watching the film rather than reading it.
