You done fricked up OP, only you know how your company would respond. Well I guess it’s the new company so maybe not.
What you should have done, is sold your info to the contractor and had them 1099 you for all the work that your process did for them. Then the contractor reimburses you privately, they do nothing but pay you and keep the contract, and no one else knows anything different.

While you assume your bloated staff to be a mark of pride and self sufficiency, anyone with half a brain would question why your IT department is 3x larger for a smaller company.
Furthermore, I would assume assets are being funneled to said bloated department for reasons beyond the scope of your position.
ETA: viewing the other company, I would question why those amounts of money are leaving the company rather than being properly utilized.
Meh, who needs IT?

They’ll let you go and say thanks

Understand that you are not irreplaceable and your company can survive without you.

probably get laid off because you eliminated the need for you

I took a couple of weeks and automated the entire process essentially eliminating the need for the contractors and some portion of that 500k a month. Should I expect some sort of bonus, raise, promotion, or just atta boy?
It depends on who is there to champion your cause. If the good work you did was pre-acquisition it might get lost in the shuffle with all the chaos that comes with M&A.
From a lay-off perspective, if the target's IT department is better than the acquirer's IT department, I'd expect layoffs to mostly impact redundancies on the acquirer's side.

Reality is that they are paying you to do what you did.
Now with that said, if they’d like to keep top talent, they might want to reward you for being proactive.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to make sure that they understand that you want to be rewarded for you effort.

You need to bank those Attaboy’s. It takes 1000 Attaboy’s to make up for 1 screw up.

My boss actually told me to patent it and sell it back to the company, her boss agreed. The whole intellectual property, patents, lawsuits kinda deal scares me.
It's a very common need in my field.
Sounds like it is time for a bidding war. Become the only consultant for this product and have these useless updates periodically that only you can install and charge big money.

Sounds like you should have quit, become a contractor and got the company to hire you, then used your innovative process and got paid for doing nothing

When I was in college I worked for a. Construction company that built large things (I worked on a hospital. )
The policy was if you found something that saved them money and they used your idea then you got half the money saved.
A few people were cut large checks.

You’re not going to get shite.
I’m in big data. Last year we repositioned our team. At the time there were 8 of us under a certain manager that was awful. Transferred under a new manager and within the following 3 months 5 of the 8 quit, one took a new internal position, and one is 60 years old and doesn’t do anything anyway.
So, it’s my new manager (who I have a great relationship with), and me. In the last 10 months I have defined workflows as if I were starring from scratch, built new economic models, stream lined our entire process, and made it to where we can now operate comfortably with 4 of us (minus the old guy).
I helped a 20 billion dollar company save 3 or more salaries, and I got a free lunch out of the deal.

You're not going to get anything. You are simply doing your job. You were able to save the company money because of your skill set, that's what you are paid to do.
However, be sure to document how much money you saved when it comes to raise/eval time. Your company will want to ensure you don't leave. If you are not happy with your raise, polish up that resume and find another job.

If your company is big enough to have an HR department, the only thing you can ever EXPECT from the company is misery and pain.
You might get lucky sometimes, but you shouldn't expect it.

Three pages to get to the correct answer. And LoL at the people who advised to make a secret deal with the contractor and collect payments on the down low. This isn’t a crack deal in an alley. Contractor isn’t going to risk their deal with the company to back door pay an employee. They are going to report him the second he suggest it and the dude will he out on the street.

I would ask for a nice Keurig. Maybe a box for k-cups but that could be a stretch.

should read your terms of employment or contract, which ever is the case, typically an atta boy, at best, especially after the fact, sort of a free milk and a cow scenario

I didnt read all the replies, but I know if it were my company I'd get an atta boy. With that being said, I would still ask. Worst case scenario is you are in the exact same financial boat you are in now.
