I'm taking the family to D.C. the weekend before Thanksgiving (23rd) and returning on the 27th. I could have booked several months back and was consistently getting prices online between 375 and 475 per ticket. Most strategies said to wait until September to book so I checked today and prices have shot up and most are sold out on the early flights. Did I totally screw up by not booking earlier? Any chance the flight prices drop before then?

Did you check all three airports in the DC area? (IAD, RCA, and BWI)

Yeah I checked them and it seems that DCA is the most convenient as it's right by all the attractions. It might cost as much to get a Uber from Dulles to downtown.

You generally aren’t going to get “deals” when you have a specific destination and dates in mind. The reason why people are able to find great airfare is because they look for deals and worry about destination and dates later.

In your case, it’s possible that you’ve screwed up. You just have to monitor it. Look at Google Flights often at all nearby airports and also look at Kayak which may tell you if the price is likely to go up or down.

If your dates have a day or two of flexibility than plug that in as well.

No need to Uber from Dulles. Take the Metro. There’s an express shuttle linking the airport to the current terminus near Reston. Eventually the Silver Line will be extended to the airport.

They actually might be done by late November. Currently working on the underground walkway to the terminal from the Dulles station.

Why do people not check Southwest? You can fly nonstop MSY-DCA for $280.96.

I'm in Monroe, LA. It would be a long drive to NO or Dallas. I'm stuck with United, Delta, or American.

I used the Hopper app, and it said ticket prices from Monroe to DC will probably go up $48 between now and November 7th.

They said to buy now.

I believe most studies on this say that the best time to buy is around 60 days in advance, but NOT if you are traveling on or around a busy travel holiday. I'm that case, the further in advance the better, which your situation seems to support.

I havent really seen any late october or november deals. There was just a quick fall sale two weeks ago through mid october-ish, but i'd bet there will be another sale soon

I’ve never believed the myths about when to book travel. If I find a price I like I book it.

Have you checked Jackson MS? American has a direct flight available.

That’s a great suggestion. I had no idea it was direct.
