Going to Australia soon and want the freedom of a car to venture out of the cities and see things. I know they drive on the left side of the road there and was curious if anyone here has experience doing this and tips on making the adjustment.

Did it. You just have to be real cautious and pay attention. Not bad.

Agree. Roundabouts are tricky at first

It’s no problem driving on the left after the first five minutes. It seems like you brain just flips and driving on the left seems normal. The number one tip is to always take time and think when pulling out into traffic from a parking lot, that is the only time I almost had a booboo.

If you can, go to one of the virgin islands for a couple days. You'll get it quick.

It gets easy fast. Just have your passenger help you with the left side of the car make sure you aren’t too close to the curb

Yes, it wasn't too bad. It helped that I was able to ride with someone else and observe for the first day or two. The hardest adjustment for me was to avoid signalling my turns with my windshield wipers. Roundabouts aren't too bad, I had more issues avoiding the trams and the "hook turn" since I was in Melbourne!

It's no big deal. You just need to remember when in doubt STAY LEFT!! My rental car in NZ had that posted on the instrument display.

I did it in Ireland. The wrong side of the road and car are easy to adjust to. The hardest thing for me was to remember to look the opposite direction crossing divided roads. Almost got into a wreck shortly after getting the car. Once you get that down it will be a breeze

Just did it in New Zealand, no problem. First trip out of the airport to the downtown Auckland was a bit nerve racking, but after that no problem at all. Everything is just flipped from driving in the states, and roads in New Zealand are crazy.

I moved to Aus two years ago. You can tell the North Americans in town, because we have the cleanest windshields!

That’s the only thing that took me time to get use to.

I've done it several places (Trinidad recently) and it's not so bad because you are focused on it, just visualize every turn in advance. A good GPS screen helps with this. The larger problem for me is getting back to the States and lapsing back to the left side since I'm relaxed.

I do get an automatic whenever possible, with everything going on I can do without the left handed shifting. And as mentioned, the turn signal will drive you nuts.

Not looking the right direction when walking across the street is more dangerous than the driving.

I rented a car in St. Croux several years ago. The advice given to me was "keep your arse on the grass". Really helped at intersections!

It’s not bad since you’re just following other people. The worst part about driving in Australia are the roundabouts and getting the windshield wipers mixed up with the blinkers.

I recommend driving your left hand drive car over there. It would be easier to adjust to driving on the left side of the road if you were in a car you were used to. Enjoy the trip!

Always remember to keep yourself (driver's side) towards the middle of the road.
