For some background: LINK

I took my maiden saltwater voyage to Leeville yesterday (Saturday). While the trip was a nice one, I didn't catch one damn fish. I'm hoping someone can tell me what went wrong.

I put in at Leeville public launch around 8am and fished until around 3pm. I took 3 rods, each rigged with a Cajun Thunder popping cork, 2ft leader, then vudu shrimp, matrix shad - copper sparkle w/ yellow tail, and chartreuse H&H cocahoe, respectively. High tide was that midnight and dropping until noon. A "strong" tide according to tides4fishing. Since the tide was dropping, I decided to try the north parts of Lake Jesse where the water from the north was draining down. While there was good water flow, I would not say it was clear. I could see the anchor line down about 1.5-2ft. I casted to around 3-5ft away from the grass. Pop-pop-reel-sit. After no luck there, I tried the north part of North Lake and worked my way back down to the West-East canal. Then, I thought maybe clearer water would be in the bigger bays, so I made my way down the canal to Bay Lizette and fished that coastline down a ways. The water didn't look any cleaner than in the lakes and by that time, the water wasn't moving (noonish).

Not one fish. What did I do wrong? I got a few small bumps on the vudu, but that was it. I felt that maybe my leader was too long and I was mostly sitting on the bottom (low tide). Is 2 ft appropriate, or should have I used about 12-18" instead. Any other advice?

That said, I saw a few boats out there. Most people appeared to also be fishing popping corks. I didn't see anyone pull in a fish, so maybe it was just bad timing?

Im no expert redfisher, but if you were in my boat with a popping cork, I have you rig up with a dead shrimp to help you put meat in the boat.

Others will have better suggestions, but hang in there!

Years ago I did a charter with 4 of us in the boat... not a single fish that day either. It happens.

If you are bringing 3 rods have them rigged to fish differently.

One rod with popping cork
One rod with jig head and matrix shad to fish bottom
Pick your third bait bait to search water for the last rod. Spoon, top water, suspending twitch bait, etc...

Find moving water, drop offs, holes, points. Have to figure out a pattern.

Crazy because I was like 5 minutes away and unclejackd was on the other side of the canal tearing up the fish. No idea what you did wrong

You should have probably had one of the rods rigged with a jig head and come kind of cocahoe on it. I went fishing the other day and everyone around me had popping corks with dead shrimp on and caught nothing. I had a jig head with a blue moon and caught specks and reds. Also the moon was almost full if not full the night before so chances are the fish were feasting at night and were full the next day

Just a side note: Don't get discouraged. There's a lot of really good fishermen on this board who will make somebody whose fished their entire life feel like a novice.
(Not purposely of course, those guys just know how to catch fish like pros)

Three rods: one to fish bottom with matrix or swim bait(like tsunamis), one with a popping cork(I like the inticer cork), and I would have maybe a top water in third rod. My old man and I fished yesterday afternoon just north of you and had 7reds and 22 trout. If fishing artificial baits you have to move around until you get on em. Learn to love your trolling motor. When you find some fish then drop the power pole. Easiest way for a beginner to find spots that hold fish is to take notice of where you see boats fishing. This doesn’t mean to pull up next to them. Make a mental note of where you see boats and try those spots when no one is fishing them. Don’t stay in one spot more than 7-10 minutes without a bite. Look for ponds draining into main bayous, moving water, oyster beds, etc. clean water is also extremely important. No reason to be fishing in water that you just assume plant crops in. We had to experiment yesterday to find what they wanted. I caught fish on top water, under a cork, and bouncing plastic off the bottom.

I’ve had trips down that way that I’ve skunked and I fish that area a lot. Take away the positives from it. You went fishing a new place and we’re out doing what you love. Leeville is a great place to fish this time of year. Just keep going. Like everyone ride said, have your rods rigged different to cover different styles. Never know what they will want that day.

We fished Lake Mechant yesterday. Didn’t get out there till 9ish. Limited out on Reds. Shrimp under a popping cork. Not sexy, but productive.

I went Friday to the Sulphur Mine and only caught 1 keeper.

Today I went to Catfish Lake and did much better with a couple real nice trout. Caught a lot of dinks but it kept it fun. Did a little scouting and learned part of a new area, I do plan to fish the area more often. Last 2 trips prior to this one I seriously thought about putting a for sale sign on my boat, getting skunked it happens.

As far as a GPS. I had never been to Catfish lake before today and used my phone to find my way. I had 4 bars of service the entire time out there, you could actually see the cell towers while fishing. We caught all of bbn our fish on a chartuese sparkle beetle under a Versamaxx Popping Cork.

I bring 4 rods with saltwater fishing.

1. is a popping cork with some type of soft plastic.... Z Man, Matrix, H&H Coacahoe....

1. is the same thing except rigged for the bottom.

1 is a baby minus

1 is a gold spoon in the summertime or a jig head with a split shot about 12" from for dead shrimp to bounce off the bottom in the winter.

Fishing is a lot harder than people think. Sometimes you get beat down. Just stick with it and try to learn something new every time you hit the water.

next time put some live/dead shrimp under that popping cork. maybe a live cocahoe. if don't catch anything, hire a guide to learn the area.

Right place at the right time is what it boils down to. Sounds like you had the right rod setups. We were right around the corner from you hammering them on matrix under cork and some live shrimp that a passer by gave me.

I’ve had brutal trips to big lake & Vbay this month... But a good day like we had today re-lights that flame and makes you even hungrier for more. Keep at em!

I’ve been killing the Reds since early fall. Fished Lake Mechant last week with no success on trout, but got on the reds fishing a drain to the lake.

We went not long ago also had zero luck with popping corks baited with live cocahoe or shrimp.

We moved to jig heads fishing the bottom baited the same and started catching. Rig your poles different, catching sometimes is difficult until you find what they want.

Had family in that area from Thur-Sun. Limited on reds everyday within a couple of hours using dead shrimp only.
