I’m thinking about taking a one night trip to Bruges via train from London.
Anyone been? Any tips on restaurants, etc?

Yes. It was my favorite city in Europe when I backpacked around in the late 90's. I pretty much just walked around admiring all the old buildings. The people there were very friendly as well.
I've seen some people call it overrated though.

How's a fairytale town not someone's fricking thing?

Not sure. I've also read it gets really crowded with tourists. It wasn't crowded at all when I went. I even had a 4-bed hostel room to myself one night. Perhaps it was the time of year I went(November).

I've been a couple times. It's a beautiful little town. Gent is nice too, which is about 30 min from Bruge i I remember right. The tall bell town is really neat with an interesting museum. I can't remember which town has an old medieval castle, but That's to check out. Frommers has a walking path for Bruge, Is check that out. Both town Centre are nice. Beer museum.

We enjoyed bruges. Very medieval and easy to see it all in one day. We ate at a open air restaurant near the tower....cant remember the name.....but the food to eat is chocolate and french fries that were invented in belgium. Beer and chocolate and fry restaurants abound...........

I couldn't recommend a restaurant since I just ate in the square near the big church. Did find a couple hole in the wall type bars with a decent tap list.
Personally I liked Antwerp and some smaller cities more than Bruge because it was crowded. Was a beautiful city though and traveling by canals was fun to see it.

We went about 5 years ago during the winter.
The belltower is cool (very narrow) and there is a church that supposedly has some blood from Jesus. There is also really good hot chocolate.

I've been in the summer....its full of tourists and shops that cater to tourists.....might as well call it Disney Land. It was awful IMO. I much prefer Ghent or Antwerp.

Amazing- thank you.
I’m hoping it won’t be crowded as it will be February. I’ll be there 1 night.
Is a boat tour worth it?
I want to check out the alcoves. Or should I say “nooks and crannies”?

quote:Yes and no... personally I would have preferred the private boat tour vs the group one... If I could do it again I would go that route.

My favorite thing was walking through this Church area they had where they had essentially tree houses, then with the Swans and shite it was pretty neat.
