Prices for the same flight I've been watching just went up $500

I've been watching flights from NO to Rome, returning from Venice ten days later.
They've been ~$1100 each until the new year. Now the same flight is $1600.
WTF?
This was through AA on June 4th, returning on the 14th.
There is another flight for $400 less, but it is a 21 hour travel time with two lay over, including Istanbul.
Will the AA prices come down or did I wait too long?

Airlines sell seats in price tiers. They have X number of seats at a price, X number at another price and so on. Sounds like they sold all the seats at the price level you were looking at. Pretty far out so keep watching prices through February for a deal.
Slight chance they will drop price again in May to fill any empty seats they have. However, Late May is the start of the heavy travel season for families so unlikely to come down much.

Cheapair ran the numbers in 2013 for when to buy. For domestic, the it was 29-104 days ahead, with 54 days being the sweet spot. The price skyrocketed in the last 3 weeks or so. LINK
International numbers were different and depended more on destination and time of year. For flights to European vacation spots for the summer, a hot ticket, the best time to buy was 319 days in advance. Otherwise, 151 days in advance was good for Europe in general. LINK
They also found that booking "too early" did not cost you as much extra as booking too late, and being late also runs the risk of no seats available or having to fly a crappy route or carrier.

Download the Hopper app, it will tell you when prices will go up or down. Not 100% guarantee, but it is pretty accurate.

They'll drop under $1200 at some point. $1600 is the peak for Europe. You may want to pull the trigger at anything under $1200, but I'd bet if you watch you can get them under $1000 still.

Also, make sure to dump your browser cookies. Some of those sites know you have been watching and bump up your prices to frick you over.

I’ve been using google price tracker for awhile now. Checking my saved flight notifications is one the the first things I do in the morning. In the months before a flight, there will be price spikes and price low points. However, most of the time the price of the flight is roughly the same. I’ve noticed large price spikes reserve the following day. I’ve had instances where google listed a price change but the airline price didn’t move. If you can buy on a dip from the average, buy then.

How are you searching for flights? If you choose the layover yourself, you will probably save tons. For example, there is a flight for $270 nyc to Rome on June 4th. You can then search a separate flight for msy to nyc for $150 and you are only at $420 to get there.

I've been watching Google Flights with a search of multi cities, NO to Rome and a return of Venice to NO.

why not just book a round trip in/out of Rome and take the choo choo from Venice to Rome on the night before the return flight?

$349 New Orleans non stop to Frankfurt, then get a flight to Rome for under $100.
I'm coming back from Venice in May, best/cheapest route seemed to be through Dublin.

Stay overnight in NYC since I've never been there
June 15th:
JFK to NO on JetBlue
2:46pm to 5:04pm
The total is $2166 (2 tickets) plus one night in NYC (may do two nights in NYC)

There is another flight from NO to JFK on JetBlue that lands exactly 3 hours before the flight to Rome. Could I do this one instead or am I calling it too close?

June 4 will be a long long day but airports are much more fun to put up with on the first day of a trip rather than the last.

Jetblue and british airways are not partners and they're in different terminals so I'd highly suggest the early morning flight. While 3 hours may be enough, I wouldn't cut it that close on an international flight

I would personally try not to transfer flights on your day of arrival to europe, unless you are going to a smaller town that you can't fly directly to from the USA or it saves you many $100s. I did it this summer, flew into Dublin and then took a flight to London. Saved me a ton of money, but it really wrecks you. You get in 3-5 hours later due to waiting on another flight and then flying, and you really don't get a chance to sleep. So you arrive around 12-1 at best instead of 8-9am and you are tired as hell. So while the first day in Europe is tough, its almost worthless if you do an additional flight in my experience.
