So, tell me some football things about Brian Kelly

I admit I don't follow all of these coaches in detail like some of you guys. I mostly love the Coaching Changes Bowls because of all of the insane and fun stuff that gets thrown around. So I turn to those with more knowledge.
I do know (or at least think) that his experience/expertise is on the offensive side. And that he is known as something of a disciplinarian. And I respected his message to his team. That's about the extent of my knowledge. So:
- What type of offense does he run? (spread or more traditional)
- What does his pass/run ratio look like?
- Is he known as a QB developer?
- Has he expressed a preference on defensive formation, or does he leave that to the DC?

Kelly is the winningest active coach in college football and the winningest coach in Notre Dame history, surpassing the legendary Knute Rockne.
His record is 284-97-2 in 31 seasons overall and 113-40 in 12 seasons in South Bend.
His .742 winning percentage is behind only that of Alabama coach Nick Saban among active FBS coaches (.802).

He wins at a school that requires a 30 on the ACT and for student athletes to pass biology and economics while having a full time schedule.
He's going to a school that requires you to spell ACT to get in and has Physical Education and underwater basket weaving as classes once a week.
He's going to kill it in the next 24 months.

He recruits and develops bad arse offensive lines.

His teams are tough.
He has a hard on for the trenches
He's not Broderick Fobbs

From what I remember his teams always seem well organized and disciplined

Will bring stability to the program. 86% winning percentage over the last five years. Will have his team ready to play every week. Had a wide open passing attack at Cinn. Knows how to handle five star players.

Physical football. Makes adjustments according to his strengths. Big strong and smart oline is his identity. Gets that he has to work with the politics and other factors beyond football. Essentially just a smart man

Proven winner at every level he’s been a head coach

- What type of offense does he run? (spread or more traditional)
Started as a more traditional 4 verts spread (think older Leach or Harrell) but has evolved into an RPO-based system in the last five years or so.
His good ND teams have trended towards a 60 / 40 or so run / pass split.

What does his pass/run ratio look like?
See above. You do not want a Brian Kelly team throwing the ball all over the yard.
quote:
- Is he known as a QB developer?
From a Notre Dame fan, this was his calling card coming in, but it really proved to be his biggest shortcoming and what ultimately could not get us out of purgatory.
He only had two starting QB's finish out their eligibility (Rees and Book), and quite a few (Crist, Golson, Kizer, Wimbush, and Zaire) regressed.
He will need to hire and - more importantly - trust a skilled OC and QB developer. He seemed to not be able to get out of his own way there while with us.
quote:
- Has he expressed a preference on defensive formation, or does he leave that to the DC?
He has generally left formation preference up to the DC but he hires with an eye towards preference based on the evolution of the sport and provides a fair bit of strategic input. He has a damn good, and underrated, eye for defensive coaching talent. Mile Elston - his DL coach - is one of the best in the business, and you'll want Kelly to bring him with him.

quote:At ND- pro-style with gap primarily (hat-on-hat) blocking w/some zone blocking mainly on pass downs long yardage. Good bit of read option with Ian Book, less now and more RPO (but not the base, that's pro-style).
- What type of offense does he run? (spread or more traditional)
At Cinn- a spread, gap blocking, some RPO, not a lot of condensed formations. Wasn't really dink-n-dunk by the way. Lived on big plays with an outlet hanging around just in case.
quote:At Cincy (and before) he was considered pass happy approaching 60/40 pass/run.
- What does his pass/run ratio look like?
At ND he's just above the 50 mark on passing.

At Cinn had about a 50/50 pass to rush ratio.. About twice as much passing yardage to rushing yardage per game. At ND favored slightly more rush plays than pass and obviously more passing yards per game but not twice as much as rushing. At both schools, loves to throw the ball to running backs and tight ends.
