I think you are correct. They needed Kamala to get the black voter interest for Biden 2020 AND Buttigege on the 2020 ticket would have been a turn off of independents and the liberal leaning christian voters.

The followed the Democrat game plan of using the Black voters to win an election and then discard the black votes (and black drawing candidate) in favor of a white married gay guy who the white voters would have also rejected.

Of course, this will change nothing in the voting habits of anyone who votes based on race or gay rights.
