Going to Europe in a few weeks and Covid is spiking like crazy there. Highest it has ever been in some places.

Normally I wouldn't care for myself, but most of Europe has been pretty bonkers about lockdowns and so on.

Austria is going to a lockdown for the unvaccinated.

Germany looks like it may follow suit on thursday.

The Netherlands are going to a "partial lockdown" for all.

France is warning of a "5th wave".

Cases will spike with winter weather and more people congregating indoors. Whatever the national governments do will lag the spike. Governments have one tool, in their mind, shutdowns.

I assume you’ll see movement restrictions in Europe this winter.

Hopefully they’ll be lifted by late spring.

We just cancelled a trip to France for the third time and I think we’re just going to shelve the idea for the time being. We’re not really last minute trip planners (due to work vacation policies and such) so while we get alot of PTO, some of it has to be request pretty far our and each time we commit, something like this has popped up.

I keep wanting to book a trip for the Spring, but can't bring myself to do it, not knowing what these crazies are going to shutdown by then.

It would be the function of purpose of trip:
For business, no problem in going.
For tourism? I'd probably wait until spring or as you wrote said, go south.
In Holland you must be screened (tested) before being allowed in a restaurant. And the test result is only good for 24 hours. A ten day trip means ten days of tests. Who knows what the Germans and Austrians will cook up?

Leave for the UK Thursday, they seem to be set on not changing anything from what it is now, but if I told you I wasn’t anxious I’d be lying.

We are holding off on Europe. All signs (increased cases, winter approaching, people indoors)point to lockdowns coming and I just don’t think it’s worth it.

I’ve got a trip to Spain in early June and while I keep telling myself it should all be over by now…I also realize that I have been saying that for almost two years. Really don’t want to drop the coin to travel to closed countries, testing/vaccine demagoguery, and masks to sit outside on a park bench.

What a stupid, downward spiral we’ve all gotten sucked into.

We canceled our river cruise starting 12/14 with 2 day stay Prague and then a 5 day cruise down the Elb to Berlin for 2 more days.
We had read that Germany was not allowing the Christmas markets to open again this year and they were having over 60,000 new Covid cases a day.
We were able to schedule a 10 day West Indies cruise leaving 12/13 out of Puerto Rico.

On a plane right now, a week in Switzerland, guess we can get in and out before the Swiss do anything. But a lady next to me has been hacking a lung for an hour and it is really annoying.

Can’t imagine why anyone would’ve spent the money to go over during these times. I have friends living over there and it’s completely fuked beyond comprehension for everyone. Waste of money and bad judgement IMO. Good luck

I've got the Maldives, Netherlands and Greece booked for May 2022. I'm thinking the Maldives and Greece may be fine but if the spoke doesn't slow I could see the EU go back into a lockdown.

This is in the FWIW category.

Friend just landed in Greece today and had this experience:

So you’re gonna love this. We thought we had all our bases covered with AA and British Airways (passports, vaccine certificates, verifly…etc). BA docs showed final destination at Athens. Then as we land and are going through immigration they ask us for our QR code. We show them the one we had and guy is like “no for entry into Greece, your airline should have told you….” Pulled our our our vaccine cert and Then he says “you must go this way” and we head to a special line. Two nurses there take our passports, Swab our noses and take our cell numbers. I ask “what’s next?”, my nurse says it is ok, you will get sms from us in20 minutes, and they lead us to new line. We’ll we’re the only people in the new line and we can see massive line on other side from our flight and others queuing to get through. As we’re 1st in the special line, dude calls us over looks at our passports and says “welcome to Greece”. ??. Not having our ?? together saved us a 45 minute wait ??. Never got an sms from them so all must be good….,

Looked it up. Not sure how a US Citizen would get one unless it's issued in the country you start in. Once you get the QR Code it's good in any EU Country. I've read where you'd have get like a pharmacist or doctor to enter you into the system.

Entry into Czechia wasn’t hard. Just filled out the locator form previously. Nobody even asked for it. Must’ve been an online thing.

Selected scenes from Prague. The Christmas markets are closed across the country. Seems very festive overall despite that. Very vibrant. Seems less restrictive than Germany. Proof of vaccination is required to enter any restaurant. Masks are worn inside. Not that onerous at all. Not sure how stringently it’s enforced vs. Germany either.
