1989. Mike Archer 4–7
1990 Mike Archer 5–6
1991 Curley Hallman 5–6
1992 Curley Hallman 2–9
1993 Curley Hallman 5–6
1994 Curley Hallman 4–7
1995 Gerry DiNardo 7–4–1
1996. Gerry DiNardo 10–2 6–2 T–1st (Western)
1997. Gerry DiNardo 9–3 6–2 T–1st (Western)

1998 Gerry DiNardo 4–7
1999 Gerry DiNardo 3–8

Pray we aren't headed this way. Would you say this was the worst times of LSU Football? 2 Bad years (COVID 2020 & 2021 season) shouldn't mean we are headed that direction.

1. I believe LSU is still one of the more credible jobs to have in football. We have declined however, I don't think we are in a dumpster fire shape rebuild like a Tennessee or USC. I think coaches all over want this job more than any vacant HC Job.

2. I trust Woodward as an AD. He's going to hire someone like Kirby or Saban who will compete with those teams, win recruiting battles, and build healthy culture.

I have complete confidence in Woodward and our program. If there’s any issue, I think it’s the NFLSU bullshite that Orgeron’s been pushing since 2016. It’s bad for our culture, counterproductive, and it needs to die when he leaves. It’s completely destroyed our competitiveness and it’s the biggest hurdle the new coach will have to fix IMO

I forgot how bad Curley was at LSU. I know we bring him up a lot as a terrible hire but damn.

How old are you btw?

The program was in this state because it was being run on a shoe string budget by a short sighted AD who in 1999 pitched low balling Saban to Mark. He was literally the anti-Woodward

Both facilities and coaching salaries were well behind the standard for the time. We aren’t anywhere near that situation today.

It’s amazing how many people on this board want to go back to penny pinching a bunch of money that isn’t theirs and will be allocated for spending in the athletic department anyway. I guess spending $3MM-5MM extra on a coach rather than new windows in the PMAC is unthinkable and worth our program slipping back into the 90’s

Several of my friends had watch parties for the Independence Bowl. That’s right kids. The Independence Bowl. It might as well have been the Super Bowl to us.

Revisionist historians will tell you Gerry DiNardo was a horrible coach.

He was actually an excellent coach who let his ego get the best of him.

He did, in fact, bring back the magic. He recruited well and left a solid roster for Saban. He made some bad hires and wouldn't admit he made mistakes and clean house, or fire his friends.

Lots of coaches make bad hires. But refusal to fire bad coaches is what usually gets them.

Other than beating Bama in 1993(I was there) the period between 1989 - 1994 was awful. This was a different time when little money was spent on facilities and coaches. We are no where near those dreadful years. As bad as it was, I still went to the games. Not sure why we kept Curley for 4yrs.

Miserable times, much like we see now. However, I know some guys that were on those Hallman teams, and they all love him to this day. In fact, they like him a lot more than Dinardo. I always thought that was strange.

I actually teared up in the 4th quarter of the season finale vs Arkansas when it was obvious we would win and therefore have a winning season and bowl bid.You are absolutely correct. In Dec 1995 that Indy Bowl was as good as the Sugar Bowl.

These were my last year of undergrad and all of law school. I only became a fan of college football a few years earlier. Calling LSU mediocre was a compliment. I just laugh at those here talking about how bad things are now.

It’s not how much money you spend, it’s how you spend the money. We had the second highest paid coach in college football and look where it got us.

Dumb arse take. Ed was a bargain bin coach who got a huge raise because he miraculously fielded the greatest team ever. He was never the expensive option

ETA: and to build on that, he became the 2nd highest paid coach in college football and it didn’t mean shite because his entire contract was paid out by booster donations, so why does “how the money is spent” matter to you again?

I wonder how DiNardo would have done had he cut ties with Tepper and gotten someone like Muschamp

1995-97, DiNardo was on top of the world. He had brought LSU back, had excellent recruiting classes and had every opportunity to upgrade his assistant coaches.

He completely failed. He made moronic hires, and when given the opportunity to fire them by the administration, be bowed up like a cornered dog and refused.

He went down with the ship. He did Saban a solid, though, because it wasn’t really a rebuilding job. There was a lot of talent on the team.

Maybe if he fires Tepper and hires Muschamp, Saban doesn’t come here and get big, and we don’t have him making CFB a lot less fun for a decade and a half.

While DiNardo didn't have the success Miles had, there are some similarities to their trajectory.

Both let bad hires, and micromanagement, ruin something they had built, which led to them being fired.

If Miles would've hired a Kendal Briles type guy and let him control the offense, with Aranda on the defensive side, he never would've been fired (until the sexual harassment story came out, anyway).
