I think his genius plan for the roommate switch over shadows this. Sure, it was Jerry who would have benefited. But it was George's plan. And for all gay rights white knights, he pulled it off himself with his girlfriend and her male roomate the next season.

I had a buddy who was a bigger dork, but not a loser like George.
Once he learned to talk to women (took him til his late 20's) he could close pretty well.

I think it's quite obvious that he wasn't lying about the ramifications of being in the pool. He had gotten a bit of a reputation around New York for being well endowed. That's why he was so adamant about setting the record straight with Jerry's girl, he'd be ruined if people started to believe the hype wasn't real.
