Maybe there's hope for Gen Z: High schoolers are now training to drive 18-wheelers

Some of them aren't afraid of entering the workforce right out of high school.

Although I wouldn't have trusted the high school version of myself with driving an 18 wheeler. I'm surprised that my parents let me use their Camry.

A high school in California is now training teens to enter the industry through its truck driving school program.
Patterson High School in Patterson, Calif., is one of the first non-vocational high schools in the country to offer a truck-driving program for students.
The elective course, which is open to seniors, is a part of the school's Career Technical Education Program — helping students learn workplace skills through hands-on training.

While hiring teenagers may help with the nationwide truck driver shortage, it's probably hard to actually imagine them driving an 18-wheeler.
In the program, students are undergoing 180 hours of classroom training along with 30 hours of lab sessions outside the classroom as they get first-hand experience in trucking. Those who want to pursue a trucking career must undergo further training once they're 18 years old. Currently, truckers must be at least 21 to haul goods across state lines.
For some students enrolled in the program, the thought of actually having their commercial driver's license right before graduation is something they didn't imagine would happen.

Not a bad gig at that age.
You get to travel and it pays well. Be frugal and you'll end up with a nice college fund or down payment on a house.

They can't drive them until they're 21. Min age for CDL.

Those 18 year old California truckers can get some great experience before going OTR.

I was driving OTR in the summers (illegally) with my dad from 14 onward. Of course, I also grew up helping on the farm which meant as soon as I could touch the pedal and see over the wheel I was driving something.
Driving a semi forward isn't that hard, backing a 48 foot refer into a crowded packing plant dock on the other hand...

The job training stuff for seniors now is actually awesome.
And the tech school stuff that they can get in while in school or directly after they graduate

This won't end well, kids texting watching videos, playing games while driving 18-wheelers.

Big money in service jobs. And no student debt or indoctrination.

Total myth brought to you by the entry level trucking corporations that treat their drivers like complete shite, resulting in an employee turnover rate well above 100% - meaning they hire more drivers than they can keep for one full year. They're also the ones pushing for teenagers to be able to drive cross country, that way they don't have to wait until they're 21 to con them into signing a lease and bankrupting them for the next decade. Stay away from the likes of Swift, Werner, KLLM, Stevens, CR England, Prime, etc. They're running complete scams bankrolled by the federal government. These trucking companies are the epitome of GARBAGE - ask yourself what entry level job makes you sign on to PURCHASE EQUIPMENT THAT ALREADY BELONGS TO THE COMPANY in order work for them?

Incorrect. 18 is the age to get a cdl and operate within state lines, 21 to go across state lines.

Nothing better than an interstate full of teens driving semi’s in Baton Rouge.

I took two years of drafting in HS and worked in an engineering dept while I went to night classes in college.
I took two years of woodworking as well. Wish I had taken that up as a serious hobby. I suppose there is still time.
