The Matrix immediately comes to mind. And, while they are themselves sequels, I just can't help but wish Hollywood had called it quits after T2 and Aliens.

What else ya got?

Not technically a "sequel", but they really should have avoided making the Hobbit trilogy after Lord of the Rings.

LOTR was amazing, an Oscar-worthy set of films in the high fantasy genre, with tons of action to go with a fantastic story and acting. It was a pinnacle event in film.
The Hobbit was a straight money grab, which cheapened the entire Tolkien film universe.

While you could argue that Return of the Jedi should never have had a sequel, I think it could have. It just was a horrible implementation.

I think there’s a solid film buried between Reloaded and Revolutions. It’s just too fricking much and gets up its own arse. Like the Freeway scene could have definitely taken place when Neo meets the Architect, and then they split ways from there.

The problem is it was a trilogy and the studios rushed it. Two, fine enough material for that, but not three. Like end the first film where Bard finds them and start off the second film at Laketown. The Battle of the Five Armies does not hold enough material to justify a movie.

That said, Jackson nailed every single scene he had to: The Unexpected Party, the Trolls, Riddles in the Dark, Mirkwood Spiders, Bilbo meeting Smaug, Smaug’s death, and Thorin’s death are masterfully done. He only had enough time to get the scenes he needed to get right right, so he deliberately halfassed the rest. Jackson is not to blame for the Hobbit, and there are great 4+ hours fan edits that are excellent.

Spectre was a disaster of its own.

Even with 2, there'd be a shitload of filler.

This one's a bit under the radar but Hostel 2 ruined the first one.

The first Hostel was a really solid horror/gore porn movie where the good guy actually wins (or at least gets away)

Then hostel 2 happens and the good guy from the first one is immediately killed.

Agreed, you could condense a nice, charming single movie with about 1:45 to 2:15 runtime, that would do the book justice, and fit into a different niche than LOTR (as the books are also different niches).

But- they couldn't do that, they had to fabricate another big epic trilogy to rake in the money. Studio rules 101, squeeze every last penny out of a popular property.

Which is why I say again, it never should have been made.

Certain universes (the ones created by Tolkien and Lucas) have HAD their epic movies, let them be. If you want to explore deeper, the premium streaming series format is better. The Mandalorian is truer Star Wars than any movie made after ROTJ, and I still have high hopes for Amazon's treatment of Tolkien's Second Age. You have time for subtlety in a series, you don't in another movie.

Independence Day

The 2nd was absolute fricking dog shite. There was nothing memorable about it. I still can’t believe I paid to see that shite and didn’t walk out and get a refund.
