We did. Ours was in the basement bathroom. Had to flush the clean out, heard something pop after a few minutes of running water.

Are you on city sewer or a septic tank?
City sewer.

Last time it happened to us it was the tie in between the tub and the toilet to the main. Daughter had been flushing those “flushable” wipes and it caused a backup in the tub to show first. Just needed a snaking involving taking off the toilet. I’ll do it myself next time. $300 is probably what you’ll be paying

Half of your body doesn't work and you are a 57 year old man alone in his apartment wanting to fight people on a message board.
If I were you, I would try to think of anything I could to feel better about myself as well.

It could be a clog in the sewer line. If so that's the city's responsibility.

Thanks.
What would you recommend? Contacting the city first or have them come out and look at it first?

Yep. Call the city first.

They added the clean out and bypassed the ancient terra-cotta with pvc and everything has been fine since.
I can't imagine how much that cost end to end.

Sewer system is full and needs to be pumped out or your line is clogged.

I got screwed on this a few years ago. I had a clog and trusted the plumber I called when he recommended using the water jet. It didn’t break the clog, so they recommended digging up the line to cut out the clog. Be desperate, I agreed. ~$3000 later, it’s done. Fast forward a couple of years later, another clog. Call them back and get the same guy. He says he doesn’t have the water jet with him and it will be a few hours until he can get it. I asked him if he had a mechanical auger and he said he did, but it would cost $300 to try it. He didn’t think it would work. I had nothing to lose and said do it anyway. It cut through the clog easily and the lines flushed completely. I think if I would have had them use the mechanical auger the first time I called them, it would have broken the clog then. The water jet really only works on soft clogs.
I chewed out the supervisor because they were recommending that I replace my entire line, . It would have cost me $10k or more.
TL:DR Always ask about options

Plumbing is one of the easiest problems to deal with on your house. Plumbing is just a collection of pipes that must remain clear. The Septic tank is the only real complication. With hot water, plunger and a plumber's snake (manual or powered), you can take care of almost any problem. With the septic tank, you need to have it pumped out from time to time and make certain nothing but human waste goes down the toilets. Also youtube is your friend. Need to deal with a new house problem, do a search on youtube.
Take the time to understand your plumbing layout and tackle the problems yourself and you will save a ton of money.

This is where it’s always good to find a plumber with a camera/locater.
