Don’t take your lab out in the marsh in LA during teal season.

I thought this could go unsaid, but a guy lost his to a big gator at Pecan Island the other day. Dog went looking for a teal in some tall marsh grass and he heard him yelping like crazy. Feel sorry for the guy, but damn.

dogs get lost every damn year down at the wax.
it’s a shame some folks can’t be more aware of the situation

I saw so many guys with their dogs at the launch opening weekend of teal this year.

Maybe it's just me but too many gators out there now. I assume it's the farms putting hunters out of business? I don't know much about it but see tons out of St Bernard.

Dam, horrible.. would never put my dog in water where there could be gators

I saw a dog get run over by it’s owner in a boat which was one of the worst experiences of my life.
A gator and hearing that is probably exponentially worse than that.

You would have to be a complete moron to bring a dog in point la hache during teal season. There’s so many 10+ foot alligators there

I dont agree with this. Whats the point of having a duck dog if you dont bring them duck hunting? Its terrible to have that happen, but losing dogs is part of hunting with dogs. Don't not bring them because they MIGHT get hurt.
Should people not coon hunt when there's a highway within 2 miles? Should they not hunt lion when a cliff is nearby? Should you not let your retriever out in the yard when theres a road a half mile away? I bet the number of people who've lost a duck dog to an alligator is less than those whove lost a duck dog to traffic or pissed off neighbors.

Nah I disagree. Strongly.

Bring them hunting where it’s already cold or wait for colder weather.
Or chase your own ducks, don’t let the dog be the victim

He tries to be a hard arse about dogs being “tools”. Anybody using dogs in St Bernard to fetch a duck right now is asking for trouble. There are tons of giant gators down there.

Well this hunter can’t take that dog hunting anymore.
You’re comparing accidents versus putting the animal in harms way.

A dog getting killed by an alligator is an accident just like a dog getting hit by a car is an accident.
Many people are putting their dogs is far more danger letting them out in the yard with a highway nearby than a guy is bringing a dog teal hunting. Yall are being ridiculous.

They always are like this with dogs. Dogs are more like pigs than they are like humans, yet people treat them like they are children. People should use their dogs however they see fit. Some people let their dog sleep in the bed. Some people shoot their own dog for barking too much. I respect people’s right to do either.

So based on this picture situation below, you would send your dog out into the decoys to retrieve a duck ?

You are being ridiculous here. Why put a dog in a high risk situation? You dump your coon dogs out on the interstate?

That is quite possibly the dumbest analogy I have ever heard on the OB. As a responsible pet owner, why would I knowingly put my dog that I spent countless hours of blood, sweat, and tears training into harms way? MIGHT get hurt, do you not understand in the marsh, a gator is going to have complete advantage over a swimming dog that is retrieving a duck that you as it's owner put into that situation. Gators now are actually attracted to gunfire and decoys because they know that where there are decoys there are usually dead ducks. A dog is just a bigger bonus.
I will add on to this thread by saying that just because you are in a rice field does not make you less immune to gators either. Lots of gators here in SE Texas live in the canals that the farmers use to flood the fields. You sail a cripple into the next field over and your hound just so happens to cross the canal where a gator is and it's game over. I will hunt my dog in rice during Teal but will typically stop my dog from crossing a canal. My general rule is if the dog can touch bottom, it is ok to hunt.

Most years alligators are out in South Louisiana till mid December. No difference in teal season or opening day.
Sucks losing a dog but damn if I have to sit mine till the last four weeks of the season I might as well not have one.

We’ll have to disagree that all accidents are the same.
