Running out of the Spread never worked!

It was just Clyde making plays doing things you can’t teach and defenses having to respect the RPO with Joe. Now we are seeing what it’s like for defenses not to be threatened by our play calling/decision making. Until they are threatened and we get it together, we won’t be able to move the ball at will.
So far I haven’t seen the opposing defenses make a costly mistake, which means we’re to easy to defend and adjust. Would it hurt to intergrade a few run formations in our Offense? At this point, we have to have an organized backyard football mindset and let the athletes be athletes.

Almost every team in CFB runs out of the spread.
This is an LSU problem not a spread problem.

The spread was invented as a way to run the ball.

We’re talking about LSU, and only LSU.

Oklahoma routinely has one of the best ground games year in and year out in CFB and is a pure spread shotgun team.

TDP looked a lot better in 2019 too.
Our OL has been bad for 2 years and we don’t have diversity in our run game.
That’s not the spread that’s just the specific scheme.

bullshite. Like the guy above said- the spread was invented to run the ball.
But it's more than just creating space by spreading people out. Yes it includes that, but there's other things that make it work.
First and foremost, your QB has to identify where the space is... or more accurately where it will be post-snap, and decide to take advantage of it through the air or on the ground.
Secondly, your QB also has to make reads effectively in-play. Such as a QB reading a DE and deciding whether or not to pull it from the basket and pass, or let the RB have it and run it.
In 2019 CEH got better as the year went on mainly because the reads by Burrow (and Brady/CSE) got better. Those reads got better as Burrow became more and more an expert at Brady's offense.
Last year and so far this year we're seeing what happens when your QB is just a QB and not an on-the-field Co-OC and how it lessens the benefits of a spread offense.

Throwing from the Bunch formation never worked!
Blitzing from the Nickel package never worked!
Fake Field Goals never worked!
I love "Say Ridiculous Things Day".

It wasn’t just Clyde or Joe’s threat with the RPO, ( they did help the line out in that sense ), most importantly they beat people in the pass game and that allowed favorable numbers in the run game.
Right now, teams are making Johnson try to beat them and he can’t, by crowding the LOS and have an advantage in numbers most of the time against the run. But, even when they are in favorable position to run it they still can’t and that has nothing to do with running out of the spread.
They need to steer away from the tight, bunch formations right now because it puts too many defenders around the LOS and the line and Johnson don’t know who is coming and Lord knows the line needs all the help they can get ( along with Johnson ).

Whatever we did in 2019 worked.

There are plenty of offenses where all the adjustments are made in the booth and in the sideline.
Our running game is just boring and our OL sucks. Until last we ran Inside zone every play for 2 years. And it worked with a better OL and a good RB who could bounce plays outside if he needed to.
Now our OL
Sucks. We get no push and TDP isn’t a guy who will bust a zone read outside if he has to.

In theory it’s not hard but what the spread does is give you an answer to every thing a defense might try to do. If you have only your o line in to block the rules are
5 man box- run
6 man box- block 5 on 5 and rpo off of 6th guy
7 man box- throw touchdowns
Now, the best thing an elite qb does for you is put you in the right situation. Obviously if you are trying to run into a 7 man box with 5 blockers you are going to have a bad time. Max is still learning.

You haven't seen LSU take advantage of costly mistakes by the defense. Even with the O-line issues, a senior QB would have made UCLA pay if they used that same game plan.

Oregon revolutionized the running game and offensive style out of the spread. Auburn had a killer attack out of spread in 2013. Bama has continued to have amazing running game out of spread.

Imo to make it work you need
1. Downfield passing to keep the safety out the box
2. A RPO look from your qb
Both of those give you a man advantage on run plays. And max can’t provide either of those

It works for Oregon. It works for Ohio ST. It works for Ole Miss. It works WHEN YOU BLOCK
