I am learning the acoustic and the pain in my fingertips is keeping me from playing. I watched a video about strings and I’m wondering if my strings are too tough. Is there a difference between strings where maybe I could get into a softer string that wouldn’t cause so much pain?

Santa Cruz has some lower tension strings, I haven't tried them yet.

Get some light or extra light gauge strings. The less tension, the easier it is on your fingers. Your finger tips will still be a little sore until you build up some callous on your fingers.

Maybe drop to lighter gauge.
Tried the Santa Cruz on three different acoustics, the only difference I found was that they were 2 to 3 times more expensive.
Went back to John Pearse and Martin Retros.
The finger pain is part of the”process”. Stick with it and you’ll be rewarded.

Play a bass with Rotosounds on it for a while. You will have some hard, thick calluses in no time.

No clue. I have had the guitar for a while and dabbled in playing. Had my strings redone at a guitar center and just trusted them. Didn’t know anything about the guitar or strings at that point (still don’t!)

Yeah. Go with a lighter gauge strings. Makes a world of difference. 10-46 are good.

May not be just the strings. The guitar could have high action as well. That will make it tougher to fret. Are the strings far away from the fretboard and take effort to press? If so, have the action adjusted.

Just go with a lighter gauge string, like Ernie ball super slinky or something.

I'm not sure if they are far from the fretboard because I don't have anything to compare it to. I will say that I bought the guitar off ebay 10+ years ago.

Also, don't know what "take effort to press" is compared to so it's tough to say if it takes more pressure or not.

Go to a guitar store and play a few different acoustic guitar and use that as comparison. I believe you will find the more expensive the guitar the easier, and therefore more fun, they are play. However, at the end of the day sore fingertips is a rite of passage as you learn to play a guitar. That is why it is better to play 10 minutes a day that 70 minutes once a week to build up the fingertips.

this

Take her in for tune-up, have it looked at under the hood, and a set of D'Addario EJ16's put on. It'll be worth doing if you've not heard it with new strings, never had action looked at, and if there happened to be a problem to find it now. Plus you might make the acquiescence of a knew life long friend.

Go back to guitar center, and get them to adjust the action for you. I've seen some of those Jasmine guitars that are awful, and none that are really good. If you really want to learn to play, get a better guitar soon.

I've recommended Martin silk and steels to players with novice/tender/sensitive fingertips. Research them and see if they sound interesting to you. For bronzes, 11-52 is the lightest gauge for my ears that still retains a full, balanced sound with a nice, properly set-up acoustic. I use 11-52 on my old Hummingbird.

But no matter what you string up with, coated, S&S, even classicals, you will experience some discomfort until you build your calluses. It's simply the price you pay. And if you change gauges and/or alloys, you will need to have the guitar re-set-up for that strings' pounds of tension for best results under the hands and in the ears.
