re: UAB Hospital ER night-shift nurses refusing to work tonight as a protest.

The hospital pays what it pays. Shortages all over the country. If they would like a better wage sounds like they need to move or go back to school. Or be a traveler. $50k a year isn’t amazing but it’s not abnormal for an undergrad degree either. Add in the overtime and you’re looking at 65k. Much better than someone with a history degree.
I don’t like arguments about how much someone with a degree should get. It’s based on what the market will value your services at.
Why are so many of you hating on the nurses for negotiating a pay raise? Kind of how capitalism works…

Problem with travel nursing is that you might not have a job when demand goes down
I knew a travel nurse (no pics) years ago, way before Covid. She could work as much as she wanted to. There’s always maternity leaves, etc. She was quite attractive so maybe that accounted for her demand.
She made a lot of money and got to pick and choose her assignments.

That should be done on an individual basis based on ones qualifications and experience. That’s capitalism.
A nursing degree is not hard to get, evidenced by all the idiots who get one. Why shouldn’t I equate it to another? Engineering being one outlier because it’s actually pretty hard to get then get a PE.

Wait. Y’all are telling me that if I go get a Herzing nursing degree and become a traveling nurse, I can make $100/hr?
My sister travel nursed for years, now she is permanently in Colorado. Some places pay well for travel nurses, many don't. You also don't have the benefits normally, you are generally 1099 contractor I believe or work directly for the travel nursing company and get benefits they pay. Its not as good as the local hospitals, or everyone would travel nurse.
Right now the travel nurses are in ultra high demand obviously. But lets not act like this is a normal situation that will stay around forever.
This is like comparing being a roofer or tree worker in south louisiana. Yeah the pay is great right now, but its not all sunshine and flowers always. Most of them do it to move around. But generally in non Covid years you are working in hospital systems that are understaffed, and they are understaffed usually for a reason and that's because they either suck or they are in shite areas no one wants to work. You may be able to move to LA for a week but you are working in Oakland for example.
TLDR: comparing full time employee nurse pay to a travel nurse pay is an ignorant argument especially coming from a nurse that knows.

That’s the story that nobody really likes talking about here.
Want to make $100/hr? Enjoy doing it in Shreveport working 4 night shifts a week with no option but to work the nights they tell you to and listening to gun shots ring out while you walk to the hospital from your parking spot.
Want to work the great assignments in San Diego, Bozeman, Charleston, etc for 3 day shifts a week and enjoy your time spent there? Enjoy making basically the same rate you would working at Baylor Scott and White in Dallas with no benefits.
It’s the same shite as the pipeline welder, crane operator, flow back hand in the oil field, etc. Make good money, with no benefits, no guarantees and work when they tell you to.
It’s not as lavish as many make it out to be.

They’re getting paid under market rates. If you were talking about entry level nurses then the degree argument would be a little stronger. Your example of a history degree doesn’t compare. There isn’t a strong demand for history majors in the marketplace. There is for nurses. Hence the shortage.
I think you may be misinterpreting what they’re doing as akin to a union.

I understand it seems outlandish for RNs to make what I stated in a previous post. I have had this argument on the OT before. California paid these wages many many years before Covid. I wouldn’t have believed it either until I came out as a traveler and got my hands on union contracts. Supply/demand and unions have raised the wages here where I can be middle class. I could not provide for a family of 4 on alabama wages. I am not advocating that alabama pay California wages, I am simply advocating for fair compensation. A comparable home in a comparable area there would cost me 1/2 of my home here. My pay would be 1/5. The math doesn’t stack up.
Edit:we get employer paid health are for our families including elderly parents, employer funded pension, 403B match, PTO, Sick time etc. this is apples to apples a much better deal and we got it from collective bargaining.

Yes, it’s likely travel (or contract) nurses likely getting double the pay of direct employees.
Posted on 9/7/21 at 9:37 am to SaintsTiger
People mad about nurse's pay yet same people have zero issue with what River pilots make.

That’s why I started my fricking post with them needing to negotiate on an individual basis, you dolt. Companies always try to get the cheapest labor possible for their desired outcome no? Some value higher paid employees because they value what those individuals bring to the table and even then they try to pay less than market whenever possible. Some value bottom line over everything.
Ask for a raise, but be prepared to leave to get it. Simple. If you’re a nurse/murse then go where the demand is. Sure that’s not easy but people in all industries who don’t have a prospective employer in damn near every town like nurses do make it happen every fricking day.

Yep
You make a decision to become a nurse, you take a job at a specific hospital and they still bitch.
Quitting and moving or finding another spot doesn't even register with them.

Yall love the free market when talking about dismantling the minimum wage. But when workers use it to their advantage yall can't stand it.
They have the leverage here. Why wouldn't they use it to their advantage, just like employers have been doing for decades? I really can't figure many of yall out. If this were reversed and they were laying nurses off yall would have no issue. This is the inverse of that.
This hospital can fire them if they want. But guess what, the hospital needs them. This is supposed to be about lives right now, but when employers make the tough cuts its just business?
fricking hypocrites.

This is true. just longer wait time for all the bullshite that comes into the ER these days especially at night. If you’re sick you get taking care of fast. And I’ve been doing ER a long time.
