Returning a rental car to the wrong city

Anybody ever done this. Got a complicated story brought upon by my own stupidity but basically I need to return a rental car to a different city than I booked it from. What's going to happen when I do this?

Your credit card gonna get raped.

They charge a pretty good fee.... thats about it.

Your rental rate will jump up and will probably end up being close to double your agreement.
Can you not call and tell your sob story and try to get a break?

Is it going to be more than like $700?

Blame it on Ida and maybe they'll cut you some slack

Can you somehow blame it on the hurricane? Might get you some sympathy if you can.

I was supposed to turn one in in Atlanta but ended up dropping it off in Connecticut. It was about $300. Caught a flight back to ATL. Landed, and they had no rental cars at the ATL airport. How do you not have a single car as the largest rental company at the largest airport. I was a gold member too! I took a $90 taxi ride out to Lawrenceville. Thanks for listening.

Just make sure you give them the keys and show them it’s returned.
Unlike that guy on here who just dropped it off and didn’t tell anyone.
Otherwise you will be financially raped.

I had to do this a few years back. Missed a work flight to New Hampshire and the only flight I could get was into Boston.
You'll get hit with a decent sized fee for a 1-way rental. I don't recall how much, but it wasn't a "holy shite" amount.

I’ve done this
Basically they charge you a ton of money, you have to call and tell them it’s ridiculous. The first chick says there’s nothing they can do, policy etc.. say “fine, put me in the line with your supervisor”.. she’ll say we can reduce it $50. Say no and the next guy basically waives the whole fee. In my case it was $650 and reduced to $30
That’s what happened to me anyway

They're "holy shite" more expensive now when compared to a few years ago

Naw, a few hundred maybe

Yes. they charge a one way retrieval fee + mileage on top of that. A plane ticket may have been cheaper.

So we are going to Southern Cal September 22-30 picking the car up in LA and dropping off in Vegas. I accidentally booked it through Expedia for July 22-30 and just realized it.
They said if I re-book through the company and give them the confirmation number they will refund me. It was $1100 originally but now there are no options for me to rent from the same company when dropping off a different location but I can get a car for the same time frame if I choose pick up and drop off in LA for like $400. So if I just book that and drop it off in Vegas they could charge me up to $700 and I would still come out ahead right?

Wreck it and tell them to come and get the burning hulk.

I think you answered your own question.

I rented a car in Miami and returned it in Key West, it was like $160 I believe. But, I did let them know that was the plan from the beginning.

it really depends on the situation, sometimes the agency where you're dropping off might need that car, in FL I've had them practically give me a car for free to drop it in another city, I would call the national hq before I just showed up to drop it off, sometimes they're more negotiable
