Running generator around house

How far do you keep it away from your house? What about under your front stoop with the exhaust pointed out, or if you have to move it further, can it be in the rain for extended time?

6ft or so with exhaust pointed away.

You want to make sure it’s clear of any overhangs, soffits, vents, etc. CO can accumulate into the attic and displace into the living space.

Yes.

Rule of thumb is 20 feet or so (uncovered, so not in your garage, carport, or overhang).
If you need to get it further it will probably be OK in the rain but I would (and have) made a makeshift roof out of a piece of OSB and a pair of sawhorses just to keep the driving rain out of the electronics.
Obviously you cannot set up this temporary generator shelter until after the winds have dies down.
Hope this helps.

I sit mine in the garage under the overhang with a fan blowing the exhaust out away from the house.I think the fan helps keep it cool also.

Get a sheet of plywood, put it on top with 2 cinder blocks holding it down. I did this for years to block the rain.

The news says 20 feet away. Main thing is to make sure the exhaust isn’t coming back towards the house or trapped under a patio or awning.

Im just going to chime in. Under a carport with two open sides should be fine. Its not displacing oxygen. Its making water, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. Unless there is absolutely no wind or if you fall down next to the exhaust, you will be fine. Just dont point the exhaust at your door.
The main thing is dont keep it in an unventilated place or inside

Please do not put it under your car port or any other roof that is attached to your house. Put it as far away from your house as you can, the rain won’t hurt it.

How long can I run my whole house generator with natural gas continuously before having to shut it off?

Where did you get the natural gas kit for the generator?

Run it until it’s not needed

Some say to give it a few hours rest once a day.
I say as long as the hours don't exceed the service interval for the oil/air filter, let er rip.
I would at least shut it down and check the oil once every 24 hours just to be safe but that's just me.

What size extension cords is everyone using?

Second this - during the ice storm we lost power for four days and it was recommended to shut it down once a day and check the oil.
I saw another thread this week suggesting the few hours rest after the oil check, and while we didn't do that during the ice storm (we only had it down long enough to check/add oil), we probably will for this one because of the heat.

It all depends on how long and what you have plugged into them.
Longer runs will need to be heavier, and don’t try to plug 20 things into one cord.
When I was building my house I bought a bunch of 10ga outdoor cords and they’re stout. I ran a lot of things from my temp pole over 250 ft away without any issues (saws, routers, etc.).
